Description Windfola sighed for about the twentieth time that day. Her swollen stomach bulged uncomfortably and she shifted from hoof to hoof in an attempt to alleviate herself. A breeze whistled through her mane and she looked up at the sky, watching as the sun slowly made its descent into dusk. A snapping twig sound from behind startled her and she spun around as quickly as she could, one leg already raised to run.

But it was only Thowra.

Windfola’s ears involuntarily pinned against her skull before she schooled them to stay relaxed. She fought to keep her breathing even as the stallion as approached and tried to offer a small smile. She hoped it was convincing.

”Hey there…” Thowra said awkwardly as he came up in front of her.

”Hello.” Windfola replied, too quickly.

The pair stood in uncomfortable silence for several moments, neither looking the other in the eye. Finally, Thowra cleared his throat and Windfola glanced up from the ground.

”So...I know you’ve been avoiding me ever since...uhm…” he tried, ears twitching.
”You know. After we…”

”Yes.” Windfola interrupted, eager to cut him off. ”I, uh, have been avoiding you.”

”Oh.” Thowra blinked, clearly not expecting for her to admit it so quickly.

The silence stretched on between them again. Windfola sighed.

”Look, I’m sorry.” she blurted out. ”I’m sorry for...what happened between us.”

Thowra’s face showed every emotion clear as day. He was hurt, and badly, by her statement. His ears flattened and his head drooped. ”I...didn’t realize you felt that way…” he mumbled. ”I thought...maybe…”

”You thought wrong.” Windfola forced out, turning away, unable to face him head on. ”I...I used you. It meant nothing to me.”

Thowra let out a shaky breath, his whole body shuddering with the effort. ”But...why…?” he asked softly.

”Because...i-it doesn’t matter.” Windfola snapped, cheeks burning. She turned to run off but stopped short, glancing over her shoulder. ”Don’t worry about the foal. Of course I’m going to care for it to the best of my ability.”

Without another word, Windfola ran as fast as her belly allowed her through the trees, leaving Thowra all alone with his thoughts.

She didn’t know how long she ran for, but her sides were soon slathered with sweat and her nostrils flared with each breath. Soon she had left the trees behind and was by herself in a dipping valley. Slowing, she stared up into the red and orange sky, hoping to see some kind of answer or sign. A stirring in her stomach made her wince as she cramped and her legs began to shake with the effort of standing. Giving in, she fell to her knees and rolled onto her side, heaving in the tall grass.

Sobs wracked her body that had been fighting to get out for months. It was all so wrong. All so unfair. The life the grew inside of her wasn’t what she wanted.

It had been a mistake. It had all been a terrible mistake.
