Description
It was another beautiful day. Birds were singing, the sky was clear, and the sun warm.
And yet Breigo was annoyed.
He was annoyed like he had been ever since he agreed to let Firefoot tag along with him. The other male had a knack for yanking Breigo’s tail. Every time Breigo thought he’d get some peace and quiet, there was Firefoot, demanding attention of some kind. Whether it was through conversation or comments on his observations or trying to engage Breigo in play and faux-fights, Firefoot always wanted something from him.
It was exhausting.
He had tried to subtly hint at parting ways, but whether Firefoot was actually too dull to notice or purposefully ignorant, the other male remained by his side. Breigo had even attempted sneaking away in the early dawn and had wanted to ram his head into a tree when he caught up only an hour or so later, laughing.
But maybe today would be different.
Breigo was intent on finding at least one mare today. He wanted to start his herd and the newest chapter of his life. It was what he had wanted ever since he was a foal and he would be damned if some chattering male took that away from him.
”Firefoot. For the hundredth time, be quiet” he growled through gritted teeth, cutting the gelding off mid sentence. ”I’m trying to concentrate.”
”On what? Oh, you trying to listen or sniff out some mares? I can help, you know.” Firefoot said excitedly. ”It’d be really nice to have some feminine charm in this little herd of ours.”
”We’re not a herd.” Breigo groaned, also for the hundredth time.
”Well, regardless. I can help.” Firefoot quipped.
And before Breigo could stop him, he was raising his head up and letting out a loud, high pitched whinny.
Breigo’s ears immediately flattened against the noise. ”No mare is going to answer that--” he began to yell before his ears swiveled at the sound of a not-too-far-off answering call.
Interest piqued, Bregio picked up his pace in the direction the answer had come from and ignored Firefoot’s self-satisfied grin. The sound had come from a copse of trees to the south. It only took an hour or so to reach the treeline. Breigo immediately lifted his nose to the air and gave exploratory sniffs.
Firefoot nickered next to him, happily prancing into the sun-dappled forest.
”Be careful!” Breigo hissed. ”We don’t know what else could be in here.”
Firefoot snorted over his shoulder. ”I can outrun anything in this valley.” he said nonchalantly. ”We’ll have to wait and see if you can, too.” he laughed at his own joke.
Breigo was not amused.
But he entered the forest, thankful for the cool shade in the deep shadows of the trees. They wandered through the trees, Firefoot pointing out every small flower or bush that didn’t grow out in the open. Breigo tuned him out entirely.
Finally, they heard something, or hopefully someone approaching them. Breigo’s pulse leaped when he recognized the unmistakable gait of a horse. He pawed at the ground expectantly, excitement bubbling in his stomach. Maybe today really was his lucky day.
Then, out of the trees, came a beautiful sight. A lovely gray mare glided toward them, long legs parting the grasses. Her mane was long and lush, her tail held out like a flag behind her. Breigo’s heart jumped into his throat. She was perfect. She was graceful. She was ethereal. She was--
”Hey! Another guy like me!” Firefoot called, voice riddled with happy surprise.
And Breigo felt his world shatter. He reared up with a choked snort.
”You’re not a mare!?” he cried at the same time his brain screamed NOT ANOTHER ONE.
The new gelding came to a halt before them, clearly unsettled by this “welcome”.
”Er, well...no…” he said softly, tilting his head to the side. ”Sorry…”
"Hey, no need to apologize!” Firefoot comforted, practically jumping to the other gelding’s side. ”Wow, I didn’t think I’d meet anyone else like me out this way.”
The stranger smiled sheepishly, clearly uncertain about the whole situation. ”My name is Desvelado. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
”The name’s Firefoot, and that gawking ninny over there is Breigo.” Firefoot supplied, tossing his head toward the frozen stallion.
”I heard someone calling and thought it would be nice to join a herd. It’s awfully lonely out here…” Desvelado trailed off, glancing over his shoulder.
”Of course you can join our herd! Three pairs of eyes are definitely better than two, am I right Brei?” Firefoot smiled with a flick of his tail.
Both geldings looked back at Breigo expectantly. He felt his eye give a twitch.
”Sure. Why. Not?” he forced through clamped teeth.
Moving stiffly, he turned around and headed back the way they had come. He could hear the two geldings begin to chat as they followed him out of the trees, clearly already bonding over their love of making stallion’s lives more difficult than ever necessary.
What had he done to deserve this?
Just as they were exiting the forest, Firefoot called out for him to wait. Ears pinned flat against his head, Breigo turned with a sour look on his face.
"What is it now?" he grumbled.
"A cranberry bush! You don't see too many of these around. I hear they're good for mares." Firefoot intoned with a sage nod.
"Well since neither of you are mares, I guess we can remember where this is for when I do find one." Breigo snapped, making a mental note of where the bush was located.
"Is he always like this...?"
Even though Desvelado had whispered, Breigo could hear him just fine, and he felt his eye twitch again.
"No, not always. Sometimes he's much worse." Firefoot happily replied.

BAHAHAHA. BREIGO FOUND ANOTHER FREAKIN' GELDING. TWO IN A ROW.
pls someone help him.
But this piece was super fun. I enjoyed putting some effort into the bg and drawing all three horses interacting was also fun. Welcome, Desvelado! He's an Andalusian gelding and his name roughly translates to "sleepless" in Spanish.
Maybe one day Breigo will find a girlfriend...

Breigo's patient is thin with the boys, but finally, it pays off for a mare appears. Not just one but three mares, but he must fight three bachelors to get to them. That's okay, though, for he has his geldings and what else would they be good for? Meanwhile a deer has it's foot stuck in the mud.

You do have plenty of options. You can make a regular herd, a bachelor herd, or a regular herd and a bachelor herd. The geldings can stay in a regular herd or a bachelor herd, if you want.

Oh...oh my. My fingers must have REALLY been crossed, haha! This is awesome, thank you so much. I've claimed two mares (264 and 238) for Breigo and I've decided to start a second normal herd with Stallion #39. Both geldings are staying with Breigo and his two new mares. I will NOT be claiming Mare 267.
Just for clarification, I can draw these as two separate events? I can have the horses dueling for mares as one event and helping the stuck deer as a second event?

To the admins: I can't edit in Desvelado's Gelding #11 link. Every time I try to edit the information, some coding errors occur and it screws EVERYTHING up. So I'll put his link here:

Ffffff of course. I can't even go and edit it because the code is FREAKING out in there. Every time I tried to fix something, it added bold to everything. ;(
