Perrrrrcy!” came Kestrel’s sing-song call.

Percy looked up from where he was grazing to see the mare trotting towards him. ”Jason and a couple mares caught a stallion sniffing around.” she said conspiratorially.

Percy nodded and asked her to bring him to them. The pair loped off and it wasn’t long before they came upon Jason, the mares, and the strange stallion. Percy almost laughed at the sight. Crane and Peregrine, both very pregnant glared at the stallion while Jason questioned him.

”And what exactly were you doing so close to our herd?” Jason was asking.

”I--I uh, really didn’t mean to get so close…” the sooty stallion replied uneasily, glancing at the angry mares.

”Stand down, all of you.” Percy said as he approached. ”My name is Perseus. What can we call you?” he asked the stallion.

”My name is Erwin. And I didn’t mean to offend…” he mumbled.

”It’s no problem. Would you like to spend the night with us? More eyes to keep watch.” Percy offered.

Erwin’s ears perked up and he smiled with a nod. Percy led the way back to the herd. At the sight of the strange stallion, some of the other mares approached.

”Who’s this handsome fella?” asked Wren, sniffing at Erwin who sidled away.

”His name is Erwin and he’ll be spending the night with us before being on his way.” Percy replied, the last words being made very clear.

Some of the mares still gathered around Erwin, happy to hear about life outside of their herd. Erwin was polite and answered all of their questions, his manners growing easier as he settled in. Night came quickly and the herd bedded down. Erwin offered to help keep watch for predators and Percy was happy to accept. Luckily, the evening passed without any incident and the sun shone on a new, beautiful day.

”Thank you again for having me.” Erwin said with a small bow to Percy before choosing a direction and starting out.

”You’re lucky that guy didn’t steal anyone in the dark.” muttered Jason, watching the other stallion leave with a snort.

”He clearly wasn’t looking for a challenge. And he was nice.” Percy responded with a smile. ”We can’t treat every stallion with aggression.”

Jason rolled his eyes and snorted again, walking away. Sometimes, he thought, Percy was too naive.
