Description
A dark pall hung over the herd. An unshakeable feeling of unease and sadness.
Faramir didn’t know what to do.
It had been weeks since Breigo’s death and still the herd seemed to be in shock. Hardly anyone spoke, no one laughed, foals didn’t play. They only mourned. Lyra and Windfola had returned a few days ago with Perseus’s Lieutenant, Jason. He had come to try to help out with the herd and Faramir was grateful. He just didn’t have it in him to do what needed to be done. He felt...empty. Every day, for the first moment he was awake, he forgot what had happened. And then it would suddenly come crashing down on him again and again.
Breigo was dead.
Faramir shivered at the thought and sighed. Would he ever get used to the idea? He didn’t think so. Breigo had taken him in and showed him what it meant to be a stallion. In every good memory he had, Breigo was almost always there. A true father figure unlike any he had ever had, despite their slight age difference. Faramir would have never been able to repay the debt he owed the stallion.
And now he’d never have the chance.
Faramir sighed again and shifted his weight. His bones and muscles ached from all of the tension. Taking a deep breath, he turned around and headed toward the edge of the herd. He had to check on her. He had to at least do that much for Breigo.
As he approached, Aisling turned her eery eyes towards him.
”She doesn’t want to speak to anyone right now.” the mare said sternly.
Faramir ignored her.
”Aloine?” he called.
No response.
”Aloine, please.” he tried again.
Silence.
”Leave her be. She doesn’t want to speak with anyone right now.” Aisling repeated, her eyes flashing dangerously.
Faramir’s lip began to curl in a growl, but instead he sighed and turned away. Aloine would speak when she wanted to, there would be no use trying to force it.
Instead, he patrolled the herd. Some of the mares glanced up to acknowledge him. Most of them barely seemed to notice him passing by.
Raphtalia and Ariadne looked up from their quiet conversation as he neared them.
”Good morning, Faramir.” Raphtalia said with a faint attempt at a smile.
Ariadne grunted.
”Good morning to both of you. How...are you this morning?” he asked awkwardly.
”Is our dad still dead? Then not good.” Ariadne dead panned despite Raphtalia’s attempts to stop her.
”I’m sorry. We’re...not well.” Raphtalia said, head hanging low.
Faramir nodded. ”I know…” he said gently.
He continued his rounds and came upon Sif, Windfola, Lyra, and Zendaya. They glanced at him as he walked by and offered stiff nods. Sif broke from the other three and came over.
”I smelt coyotes earlier. Jason went to investigate.” she reported stiffly.
Faramir nodded and said, ”That’s good. Thank you for letting me know.”
Sif nodded again curtly and returned to the other mares.
Faramir felt like he was suffocating.
Without a second thought, be broke into a gallop, kicking up dirt and loose grass in his wake. He didn’t care what the mares would think of this outburst. He needed to get away. But as it turned out, you can’t outrun grief. Faramir finally slowed to a stop, skidding in the damp grass and nearly falling. He snorted in annoyance and panted, sweat coating his body. Desperately, he looked to the sky. Storm clouds were rolling in over the mountains, promising even more dreary weather.
”What do I do?” he shouted at the sky. ”What would he do?”
The clouds continued their lazy march across the sky, blotting out the weak rays of the sun.
Faramir’s nose twitched at strangely familiar scent. Looking around, he didn’t immediately see anyone. And then, coming over the hill, he saw her.
Was he asleep?
Coming toward him at a slow trot was a daydream. Her flaxen mane waved out behind her in beautiful undulations. Even at this distance, he could see her blue eyes. Across her muzzle was a scar that hadn’t been there the last time he had seen her. One of her ears was torn. Slowly, carefully, she came to a stop not even three yards from him. Faramir gaped soundlessly, eyes wide.
”F-Fawkes…” he whispered.
”Hey, handsome.” came her husky reply. ”It’s been a while.”
Farmir took a shaky tentative step forward. And then another. Fawkes, or a mare wearing her face, stayed still, a smile on her lips.
”Is it really you?” he asked, licking his dry lips. ”You’re really you?”
”I wouldn’t be anyone else.” she replied with a melodious laugh that sent a shiver down his spine. ”I’m here.”
Faramir couldn’t hold himself back. He rushed forward and threw his neck around hers and pulled her into his chest. Fawkes laughed again and nuzzled into him happily.
”H-how? How did you get here? How did you find me? How did you get away?” a thousand questions tried to burst out of his mouth at once.
”Easy now.” Fawkes said with another laugh. ”It wasn’t easy. But it doesn’t matter anymore. I finally found you.”
Faramir bent his head down and the two touched foreheads. He closed his eyes and just breathed in her scent, still not believing this was really happening. He had thought he would never see her again...but here she was.
”You look terrible, by the way. I was just being nice when I called you handsome.” she said, shouldering past him.
Faramir followed, a lopsided grin on his face. ”Yeah well...it’s been a hard few weeks…”
As they slowly walked, he briefly filled her in on what had happened to him since he escaped their home herd. Fawkes listened intently, nodding along.
”I’m so sorry for your loss.” she said, eyes full of sadness for him.
Faramir swallowed past the lump in his throat and nodded. ”And I’m sorry I never came back for you.”
Fawkes rolled her eyes and nipped his shoulder. ”I would’ve kicked you off the mountain if you had done that after the trouble I went through to get you out.”
Faramir nodded and sighed, guilt weighing him down. Before he knew it though, they had returned to his herd. Some of the mares looked up at their approach, scenting a stranger with their stallion. Some of them even looked mildly interested.
Winona came up first to greet them and was soon followed by others. Soon, most of the herd was gathered around and welcoming Fawkes. Of course, Aloine and Aisling were nowhere to be seen, but that didn’t surprise Faramir. Right now, he was trying to focus on the good. They needed something good, afterall.
Maybe things would be ok.
