Description
Jason watched as Perseus ran off into the forest with Denna and Nightingale in tow. His mouth gaped open and closed with a wordless shout, but it was too late. The three horses were already gone. Jason snorted and shook his whole body, sending a flurry of raindrops scattering in every direction.”What do we do now?” Quail asked, voice trembling.
”Yeah, Lieutenant. What now?” snorted Magpie
Jason thought for a moment. This was his first time truly being in charge. He couldn’t let the mares, or Percy, down. Jason pulled himself up and surveyed the mares, doing a quick head count.
”Alright. Until they return, with Anhinga, we stay put. Hopefully the storm will wear itself out soon. I’m going to need help patrolling the perimeter. Lark, Wren, and Heron will help me. Vireo, Crane, Merlin, Shrike, and Quail will stay in the center of the group where it’s warmest and safest.” Jason ordered, nudging the mares he mentioned into place.
Lark, Wren, and Heron immediately stepped up, pawing at the ground eagerly. Jason directed them to patrol around the outskirts of the group, keeping watch for any bachelors or predators. The mares jumped eagerly to their tasks, holding their heads high. Jason nodded to himself as everyone took their places.
”What if they don’t find Anhinga?” Starling asked quietly.
”Please don’t say that! It would be so terrible…” moaned Pigeon, shaking with cold or fear or both.
”Don’t nobody worry. They’ll definitely find the scoundrel who took Anhinga and bring her home.” Jason said loudly, for all to hear.
”I hope they bring him back, too. I’d like to give him a piece of my mind. Stealing a mare during a thunderstorm. Cowardly!” Sparrow growled.
Jason agreed. It was the height of cowardice to steal a mare without offering the lead stallion a challenge. Jason shook out his mane again and trotted to the edge of the trees. He peered up at the clouds, that were now looking less angry and dark, and hoped the rain would cease soon. He also silently wished Percy luck in his quest--it would be difficult to search out two horses during a storm like this. He also silently hoped that Denna would stay safe and his heart gave a small lurch at the thought of her.
”Please come back soon…” he whispered into the chilly air.
