Description
White, fluffy snowflakes drifted lazily down from the cloud covered sky. It seemed that winter was going to come early this year as Perseus’s herd snuffled through the snow to eat the dying grass. Many of the mares were pregnant and were diligently searching for any nutrition they could find. Lark and Peregrine were in the nearby woods stripping the few remaining leaves off of trees while Crane and Kestrel pulled up mouthful after mouthful of grass. Percy tried to hide his growing worry that there wouldn’t be enough food to go around for the growing mares’ bellies.Poor Pigeon lay under the thick branches of a pine tree with her head tucked between her front legs. She’d recently come down with a cold and had isolated herself from the rest of the herd, worried she may get someone else sick. Jason trotted over to her now with a mouthful of leaves, twigs, and berries. He placed them gently in front of her and Percy could hear him urging her to try to eat some to make herself heal faster. Pigeon sighed and chewed half-heartedly on the sprigs, but at least she was eating.
Wren came trotting up to Percy and he turned to give her his attention.
”Some of the mares are trying to play on the newly frozen pond. I told them it was a dumb idea, but they didn’t listen.” Wren sighed with a grumble.
Percy shook his head and loped in the direction of the pond. Sure enough, Tempest, Sparrow, and Heron were testing out the ice’s strength by tapping at it with their hooves and taking tentative steps out. Dove and Nightingale stood close by watching, goding them on.
”Come on guys, this is a bad idea. The ice won’t be strong enough to hold any of you.” Percy called out as he got closer.
Sparrow flipped her mane at him and said, ”It’ll be fine, you worry too much.”
But as she set all four hooves on the ice, it cracked loudly and she had to scramble backwards before she got wet. She tried to hide her embarrassment and trotted away quickly, followed by a laughing Dove.
The other mares all muttered that maybe it wasn’t that great of an idea after all and dispersed. Percy shook his head and rolled his eyes. Sometimes, they really did act like a bunch of foals.
