”How are you feeling today?” Jason asked tentatively.”Fat. Very, very fat.” grumbled Denna as she waddled along.
Jason sighed with a smile and followed after her. ”Can I get you anything?” he asked.
”You can get this thing out of me.” Denna growled, using a back hoof to scratch at her enormous belly. ”I’m going to burst.”
Jason laughed softly but stopped when Denna shot him a glare.
”And how are you both on this lovely autumn day?” Percy asked as he trotted up.
Jason tried to signal him to be quiet, but it was too late. Denna rounded on the poor stallion with a glint in her eye.
”How am I, you ask?” she said softly. ”Well let me tell you. My stomach is bigger than the moon, my hooves ache, I can’t lay down, I’m always hungry, this brat inside of me is constantly rolling around--” she went on for a while until she ran out of breath and had to stop.
Percy listened quietly, his ears titled off to the sides, and winced. He didn’t remember Denna being so uncomfortable during her first pregnancy.
”And it’s all THIS guy’s fault!” Denna finally finished, tossing her head in Jason’s direction.
”H-hey!” Jason tried to fend for himself, but decided against it.
The two stallions awkwardly shifted from hoof to hoof as Denna stood glaring at them. Finally, the silence was broken when Anhinga and Starling came trotting up. Both mares weren’t as far into their own pregnancies as Denna, but it was still clear they were carrying.
”Wow Denna, you’re so fat!” laughed Anhinga. ”I hope I don’t get as big as you.”
Starling snorted at her side in mirth, holding a hoof to her face to be “polite”.
Denna growled deep in her throat and turned away from the two mares. ”I’m going for a walk.” she declared, heading down the hill on wobbly legs.
Jason sighed and followed after her doggedly.
”Dunno what she’s so grumpy about.” Anhinga said sarcastically.
”Yeah, couldn’t tell you.” laughed Starling.
Percy couldn’t help but smile at his friend’s expense. Hopefully she would birth soon and she’d stop leering around at everyone for a while.
”Oh, Perseus. Dove said she scented some humans close by a little while ago.” Anhinga remembered suddenly.
Percy’s ears perked up. ”I’ll go find her. Thank you.”
Percy trotted down to the rest of the herd and looked around until he found Dove standing in the shade of a tree with Crow and Phoebe.
”Good morning.” he greeted the three mares. ”Dove, Anhinga said you scented humans?”
”Yeah, while I was off to the east. They didn’t smell too close, but I figured you should still know.” Dove said with a shrug.
”I hope they stay away.” Phoebe said, voice trembling.
”You worry too much. We’ll be fine.” grumbled Crow.
Percy nodded and left the three mares. He searched around the herd until he found the mare he was looking for.
”Wren, can you come with me?” he asked the dunalino.
”Yeah, of course. What’s up?” she asked, mouth full of grass.
”Dove smelt humans not too far off to the east and I want to investigate. Can you come with me?” Percy said, looking toward the rising sun.
”Yeah, totally. Let’s go!” Wren said excitedly, trotting toward the east.
Percy followed after her and the two horses broke into a lope. They didn’t have to travel very long until the scent of humans hit their noses. They slowed down and started looking around, trying to find where they were hiding.
”There!” hissed Wren, pointing with her muzzle.
Percy followed where she pointed and saw the humans down in the valley. They appeared to be a family unit, with two adults and three young ones. The little humans were running around and shouting, chasing each other. Percy titled his head curiously. He’d never seen young humans before. They were...loud. Just like foals.
The two horses stayed and watched the humans for a little while until their curiosity was sated.
”I don’t think they came here looking for us.” Percy finally said. ”They just look like they’re having fun. We don’t have to worry about them.”
With that, Wren and Perseus headed back to the herd.
