Description
The evening rain was finally beginning to subside as daylight broke through the stormy grey clouds. The herd collectively shook the water off of themselves and slowly came alive. Despite the desperate need for it, no one was very happy with being left outside in the rain overnight. But as the sun continued to rise and the rain stopped entirely, the mares stretched out stiff muscles and began to move about, either grazing or drinking from the small creak that had been revived. Percy stretched and yawned widely, shaking the water out of his silvery mane. With sleep-bleary eyes, he surveyed the herd as he made his way through them, nodding in greeting as he went. Jason was already up and trotting about, nose in the air to detect any potential nearby intruders. Percy couldn’t help but smile at how diligent the previous bachelor had become. Despite his denial, Perseus was sure he enjoyed this herd life much better than being a roving pirate.”Good morning, Percy. How’d you sleep?” Denna asked as she approached him with a wry smile.
”Probably about as well as everyone else.” Percy remarked, looking around at the bedraggled mares.
”Would’ve been nice to have found a cave.” Dove muttered with a sneeze.
Percy’s brows drew together as he noticed the overo mare shivering. Though she was obviously trying to hide it, Dove had appeared to have caught a cold during the night.
”We’ll move out in a little while to find better pasture and warm everyone up.” Percy announced to the mares.
As the clouds finally dissipated entirely, the herd moved out as one, trying to find an area that wasn’t so rain-soaked. It took a few hours, but they finally found a relatively dry patch of land with lush, green grass. With sighs of relief, the herd went right to grazing.
”Hey, there’s some mares over there.” Starling called out as she pointed with her nose in the direction she was looking.
Percy looked over and, indeed, two mares were watching them from cautious distance. Before Perseus could say anything, Jason cantered over to them, lifting his legs and tail higher than strictly necessary.
”Good morning, ladies.” he said with a dashing smile and arch of his neck.
One of the mares, the darkly colored one, openly scoffed. But the liver mare seemed immediately taken and tried to hide a small laugh.
”Good morning yourself, handsome.” the mare said with a coy smile, inflating Jason’s ego to potentially-explosive proportions. ”My name is Quail and this is my friend, Magpie. And you are…?”
”Who cares…” muttered Magpie, going back to grazing.
Jason ignored her and replied, ”My name is Jason, but you may both call me Jace. Would you like to join my herd for breakfast?”
”That sounds lovely. We’ve been scenting wolves nearby all night.” Quail sighed in relief as Jason led them back to the group.
”Welcome to both of you.” Percy greeted them as they drew closer. ”My name is Perseus and this is my herd. You’re more than welcome to stay as long as you’d like.”
The two mares seemed confused and glanced back and forth between Jason and Perseus.
”You mean…you’re the lead stallion?” Quail asked, uncertainty clear in her tone.
Percy gave a lopsided smile and was about to reply when Denna stepped up, ears flattened. ”Of course he’s the lead stallion. Do you really think we’d all follow this meat-head around?” she growled with a toss of her head in Jason’s direction.
”It’s ok, Denna. An honest mistake.” Percy tried to smooth over the situation as both Quail and Magpie began to glare and Jason rapidly deflated.
Denna snorted before turning and walking away to join the other mares. Quail and Magpie shared a glance with each other before integrating themselves in with the rest of the mares.
”I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to suggest I was the lead…” Jason muttered to Percy, lowering his head slightly.
”There’s nothing to apologize for, don’t worry about it.” Percy said with a laugh, tugging at Jason’s mane playfully. ”Now let’s eat. I’m starving.”
