Description
It was an uncharacteristically warm winter day and rain was drizzling from the clouds above. The rain had melted away some of the snow on the ground, leaving puddles of slush everywhere and making it easier to graze on the grass. Perseus was enjoying his morning when a stampede of foals rocketed past him, splashing him all over with cold, muddy slush. Percy blinked rapidly, shocked at the sudden unpleasant feeling, that he didn’t even have time to reprimand the foals before they were gone. Percy sighed and shook himself off. He heard snickering and his ears perked up to see Denna and Sparrow sharing a laugh at his expense. Percy wuffled his lips.”It’s only funny because it didn’t happen to you.” he grumbled.
Denna nodded. ”Well yes, obviously.” she agreed.
Percy glared at her before turning and walking away. He didn’t need to stay and listen to their mockery. He found Jace nosing away a pile of snow to get at the green grass underneath. He glanced up at Percy’s approach and did a double take seeing him dripping.
”What happened to you?” he asked, going back to eating.
”Foals.” Percy mumbled, joining his Lieutenant.
The foals were all running around still, Losine in the lead. Jace’s daughter was fast and she knew it. She lorded it over the other foals constantly. But now, she slipped in a mud puddle and went skidding forward, barely catching herself before she well. The other foals shouted in triumph as they overtook her. Now Story and Marie were fighting for the lead while Kipsy, Macy, and Lorna struggled to keep up. Losine shouted angrily after them as she bolted to try keeping up.
Their mothers watched in amusement as the foals raced around the meadow. Bowie, Wren, Kaya, and Kestrel spoke among themselves, making bets as to whose foal would come out on top. The conversation was becoming heated, but staying friendly. Finally, Bowie let out a whoop as Marie apparently reached the foals’ finish line and bucked in excitement at her victory.
”That’s my girl!” Bowie called out with a laugh, kicking out a front leg.
The foals all panted as they slowly dispersed, congratulating each other on a fun race. The mares all let out a collective sigh of relief that they would have some peace and quiet...for a little while.
”Hey, these smell like human.” called out Mello.
Percy’s ear twitched and he trotted over to investigate. The melting snow had revealed a set of ruined, mud covered shoes.
”Humans wear these on their feet for protection.” he explained with a nod.
Mello tilted her head and nudged them with her nose. ”Well they smell terrible.” she grumbled, kicking them away from her.
Percy silently agreed before heading back to Jason. He glanced up at the sky and was rewarded with a direct hit from a raindrop. He shook his head and grumbled some more. What a dreary day.
