”Humans took Faramir and Winona!” Sif shouted as she came galloping back to the herd.

Every head whipped up at her exclamation and all conversations stopped. A deadly hush fell over the herd as they took in these words and slowly everyone began to turn toward Loki. The stallion stared wide eyed at Sif, not quite believing what he’s just heard.

”You’re sure?” he asked softly.

Sif nodded. ”Winona was injured and Faramir was captured trying to protect her. They took them both.”

Loki took a slow, deep breath and tried to avoid eye contact with every herd member. He needed to think, and fast.

”What will we do now?” Sansa asked him as she approached.

”We’ll...move the herd for the day. I don’t want any nearby humans stumbling upon us.” Loki said after a brief pause. ”Firefoot, see if you can pick up their scent where they were taken and see if you can track them.”

Firefoot nodded and hurried at a lope back into the trees.

”I’m going with him!” Fawkes said, face determined.

Before Loki could stop her, the mare had run off after the gelding. The rest of the mares were clearly uneasy, shuffling where they stood.

”Where will we go now?” asked Lyla, glancing around at everyone.

”We’ll head east for now. Further away from most humans.” Loki replied.

The mares muttered among themselves, doubt running rampant. Suddenly, Aloine stepped away from the rest of the mares to stand beside Loki. The others all quieted down as she surveyed them, everyone holding their breath. Though she was recovering, Aloine still showed deep scars from Breigo’s death.

”Loki is right. We will head east for now. Firefoot and Fawkes will be able to track Faramir and Winona down and bring them back.” Aloine said, voice strong and carrying. ”We head out now.”

Almost as one, the mares turned and began to walk in the direction of the rising sun. Loki let out a breath he had been holding and turned to Aloine gratefully.

”Thank you for that.” he said softly, a little awkward.

Aloine didn’t say anything, but nodded before she trotted to catch up with the mares.

Loki glanced over his shoulder in the direction that Firefoot and Fawkes had gone. He hoped they would return soon, with Faramir in tow. He didn’t know if he was cut out to lead.
