A role play between and featuring our characters Rikki and Evita for .

A doe grazed quietly in a small meadow surrounded entirely by woods. She ripped at the grasses as her tail flicked back and forth behind her, her ears facing opposite directions as she took in the sounds of the surrounding area. Why she was alone was anyones guess, but it was a benefit for the two wolves silently crouched in the brush at the edge of the meadow.

Evita's eyes were locked on the doe, ears cupped forward. Hunting was the only time she was ever this serious. She took her eyes off the deer only to nod to her companion, Rikki, to show she was ready for the hunt to begin. As quietly as she could she followed along the brush that skirted the meadow, eyes still focused on the doe. Of course, the plan was to ambush it and Rikki was more than a suitable hunting partner to take down a doe of this size.

Rikki tried to focus his attention on the doe grazing in the meadow before him and found it more than a little difficult. He kept throwing sideways glances at his hunting partner, and every time he did he could feel his heart beat faster and his stomach twist into knots. The smell of the deer should have had his mouth salivating and yet his tongue was uncomfortably dry and it was hard to swallow.

Get it together. he angrily thought to himself. He shook his head violently to clear away useless thoughts. Evita was already moving off to take her position and he tried not to stare at her as she went. They'd done this before and he knew his part well, confident in his abilities.

But as he turned to move to his place he glanced at Evita one last time, just as the sun hit her just right. The warm glow illuminated her green eyes and made her dark brown fur shine. Rikki's mouth hung slightly ajar as he stumbled, tripping over a root, and only barely catching himself. The doe's head shot up instantly as she wildly looked around before leaping away with her white tail flashing.

Evita's focus was deadset on the doe who was still peacefully grazing and unaware of their presence... and suddenly she heard rustling from Rikki's end and the doe's head shot up and she was gone. Evita sprang from the brush erratically, staring longingly after the deer before turning to Rikki with furrowed brows.

She leapt through the tall grasses over to him and shook her head, confused. Lately it had seemed as though he was on another planet entirely, his mind was always elsewhere, and it was beginning to grate on her nerves. "What happened?!" Hopefully he had good reasoning for them missing out on a good meal.

Rikki groaned and hunkered down onto his haunches, already knowing what would happen next. Right on cue, Evita leapt through the brush and wasted no time howling in his face. His ears flattened against his head and his nose wrinkled in annoyance and frustration.

"I got distracted." he muttered through clenched teeth, refusing to meet her eyes.

At his response, Evita eyed him suspiciously. Distracted from a hunt? "By what?" She questioned, peering around behind him as if she would see the answer to her own question. Whatever it was, perhaps it was what had been bothering his mind these past few weeks.

Rikki's stomach clenched at her question and his mind desperately raced for some answer, any answer, to appease her.

"It's nothing. Really. Just...stuff. That's all." he threw out offhandedly, wincing at his own pathetic excuses. Even though he hoped she'd buy it, he knew that was bad even for him.

"Let's just go try somewhere else or something." he muttered as he stood and went to move around Evita, preparing to sulk the whole time.

Evita's head tilted further and further, until she had bent it so far that her neck hurt, while he conjured up a response. He tried to quickly move around her and she blinked before turning and bouncing after him.

"Stuff?" She questioned, easily keeping up with his sulking pace. "That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard." She had to admit, he definitely had her intrigued and now she planned to get to the bottom of it all. "We can hunt more when you tell me the truth. What's really going on here?" She gave him a stern look, hoping it would force him to be more truthful with her, although at her size compared to his she was hardly intimidating.

Rikki tried to sulk harder and drown Evita out entirely as she bounced and pranced after him. He wished she wouldn't do that. He grumbled as he walked, head hung low in front of bunched up shoulders. His body felt so tense he thought he may pop. Evita shot him her 'super serious look' and he snorted with a lopsided grin.

"Pfft. You look like an unhappy squirrel." he commented as he gently batted at her with his massive paw.

Evita's face fell and now she was the one sulking, albeit playfully, at his squirrel comment. She was about to protest a response when he batted at her with a large paw. She knew just how strong he was and normally she would attempt to duck out of the way as he tended to not know his own strength, even when he attempted to be gentle, but she had no time and quickly plopped over into the grass with an 'oof'.

She lay there for a moment staring up at him with her playful pout before sitting up and growing serious again, pawing at him with a whine. "Oh please tell me." She begged, resorting to her pup-like antics and not caring about that one bit.

Rikki snorted in laughter as she went toppling over. He hadn't meant to, but it was still funny nonetheless. Sometimes he forgot how tiny she was. But of course it didn't take her long before she was up and pawing at him and whining to tell her why he'd been so distracted lately. He instantly went back to pouting and grumbled under his breath about it not being her business.

Wanting to put this conversation behind them he shook off her pawing and began trudging away again.

Evita quickly dropped the act when she heard him grumbling beneath his breath. None of her business? She watched him walk away in surprise for a beat before leaping up and quickly following after him, eyes narrowing and ears falling back. "I think it's plenty of my business when you're acting completely odd and have been for a while now. You're completely preoccupied all the time. This isn't how you used to be so what happened?" Her tone was impatient and frustrated and her stiff and hurried movements beside him further showcased this.

His stomach was twisted into huge knots as she verbally berated him. With each word he felt his hackles raising higher and higher. Her stiff movements were doing nothing to make him feel better as he felt his own legs beginning to balk underneath him. A low growl was escaping from his throat and his head was pounding as he desperately tried to drown her out.

When she finally finished her tirade, he couldn't hold it back any longer. With a frustrated snarl he whirled around on her, baring down with his full size, lips twitching in a growl and eyes glaring.

"It's because I love you, ok!?" he finally barked, words tumbling out in a rush to fall at Evita's feet.

Evita halted abruptly as he whipped around at her, snarling and growling, and while she did cower back from him, she matched his growl with her own. There was hardly a pause after his own words before she was barking back at him, "I love you too, you big idiot!"

She felt the words linger between them as she calmed her stance, her hackles that were once bristling slowly fell back flat against her back once more. She glanced around as she wondered what to say next. "Well. I suppose that settles that then." She peered up at him.

This is exactly why I didn't want to say anything, but you had to just keep sticking your nose where it didn't belong and now it's awkward--wait, what?" his growling had started before Evita had even finished her confession. His mind was a little slow on the uptake and it was only after he'd fully processed what she's said that he understood it clearly.

"You...do...?" he asked uncertainty, stance becoming weary. His hackles were no longer raised and his previously dominant position shrunk to one of weariness.

Evita listened to his long-winded response with a quizzical look, letting out a sigh of relief when he finally acknowledged what she had said. Despite also knowing how he felt, a flutter of nerves still rose in her stomach up to her chest as she responded to him. "Yes, I... do." She gave him a small smile. Everything was shifting and changing between them now, but she felt it in a natural way. She felt as though everything had been at a standstill these past few weeks while he was in his funk and finally they could move on.

Rikki's tail gave a low wag behind him. His front paws shuffled and he eyes Evita shyly. The knots in his stomach were gone but now it felt like his heart was trying to fly out of his throat. It was a strange feeling, but it was for Evita and so he enjoyed it. Tentatively he moved himself forward and arched his neck until his muzzle was lightly pressed against her's and he stared deeply into her eyes.

"That makes me...happy." he murmured gruffly, too many emotions clouding his brain.

Evita blinked in surprise as she was suddenly staring directly into his eyes. She couldn't help but laugh at this attempted display of affection. She wasn't mocking him, she was just enjoying the silliness. She pulled away and gave his cheek an affectionate lick. "This is what you were really worried about this whole time?" She shook her head with a smile. The whole ordeal seemed so ridiculous now. "Let's go find something to eat."
