With the sun beating down on her flanks, Mariposa slowed her pace to a sedate amble. She was confident she’d put a good amount of distance between herself and her old herd. Good riddance! As she gazed across the burning sand, she saw a small ribbon of blue. Hoping it wasn’t a mirage, she made her way toward the water. She perked up when she realized that the water was real and she bent her neck down happily to drink.
Picking her head up, mouth still dripping water, she noticed movement in the distance. Her ears swiveled forward toward the herd of equines. A smile broke across her face at the sight. This was her chance! A fresh start! A clean slate! She began to take a step when she caught sight of herself in the stilling water’s surface. Eyes widening, she realized how travel-worn she looked.
With another quick glance at the far off herd of equines, she waded into the shallow water, falling to her knees and rolling, relishing how cool it felt against her too-hot skin. Satisfied she’d gotten most of the dust and grime off her coat, she stepped back out onto the sand, shaking herself off briskly. Mariposa tossed her head this way and that, trying to get her mane just right.
Finally satisfied with her reflection, she struck a dramatic pose, puffing out her chest and lifting a foreleg. She smiled giddily down at herself before turning and practically prancing in the direction of the herd, stopping and changing to a calmer walk before she was noticed. Mariposa knew she would have to play this cool if she was going to pull it off. She was determined to make some good impressions!
