Chapter 2: Scars

"Chrom, when did you first fall in love with me?" you smile, feeling Chrom wrap his arms around your shoulders from behind.

You're standing in the castle courtyard, away from the wedding reception that awaits the both of you.

"At first sight, my love. I was drawn to you from the very moment I found you on that field," he pulls you closer so that you can lean your back against his chest.

"I'm glad. Chrom, I hope this love that we have lasts forever," you reach down and fiddle with the wedding ring resting on your finger.

"It will, Robin. Nothing can separate us."

Chrom snaps out of his daydream after he hears a gentle knock on the door. "Come in."

"Chrom, leaving so suddenly?" Emmeryn asks as she stands in the doorway.

Staring at the garment in his hand, Chrom remains quiet. He places the last remaining piece of clothing in his luggage and closes his eyes momentarily. The thoughts running rapidly in his mind, once figments of his imagination, are becoming more vivid.

He needs answers, fully aware that if he stays at the castle he won't receive any.

"Yes Emm, I'm sure. I just need some time to think. I have a lot going on right now. Besides father would've wanted me to complete my college education, at the very least," Chrom says, closing up his luggage. He was opting to roll it out of the room himself until Frederick passes Emmeryn and voluntarily takes it from him.

Emmeryn grabs Chrom's arm, stopping him in his tracks. Chrom looks over and sees the worry in Emmeryn's eyes. "Please take care of yourself, Chrom. If anything is troubling you, please do not hesitate to let me know."

Chrom nods and hugs his older sister. Emmeryn reciprocates, letting go of Chrom after a few moments. She silently watches him catch up to Frederick, placing a hand over her chest.

"I'm worried for you," Emmeryn trails off, soon accompanying her personal bodyguards and other officials to a meeting.

As he's being escorted out to his car, Chrom notices Frederick's frequent glances. "Frederick, is there something on my face?"

Frederick remains stern, "No sir, it just seems to me as if you have a lot of thoughts running through your mind. Has your father's death affected you dearly?"

"I appreciate the concern, but to be quite honest his death isn't affecting me as much as I thought it would," Chrom takes the luggage from Frederick's hand and places it in his trunk. He shuts it, then immediately turns to Frederick, knowing he's his closest confidante. "I have something to ask, and I'd like you to be honest with me."

"Yes, what is it?"

"Nevermind, it's not a serious question. I'll see you after I finish the semester."

Chrom enters his car and drives away, not wanting to give Frederick a chance to further question him.

After parking his car in the private parking lot, Chrom is surprised and grateful that no news outlets were awaiting for his arrival outside his apartment building. He was also grateful Frederick didn't tighten security and station bodyguards watching his every move.

Instead of what would've been considered 'chaos' with media and protection running amuck, Chrom finds you looking through your mailbox as you carry a bag with some groceries. You glance over to your left then notice Chrom walking over from the entrance.

"Crap, I'm still not ready to talk to him, especially after what happened when I first met him," you think to yourself, stashing the mail away in your tote bag. You rummage through your bag for your cellphone, hoping to be distracted from him. You hastily run up the stairs and trip up just as you're about to reach your floor, crying out in pain as your bump your knee. "Shit!"

"[Name]?" Chrom says as he carries his luggage. "Are you hurt?"

You shake your head and fluster, mentally cursing at yourself for your clumsy behavior. "I.. uh... I'm fine. T-Thanks for asking."

You get up and stand up, holding onto the bannister for support as you regain your balance. You rub your side as you make your way to your apartment in embarrassment.

Chrom feels a pounding in his chest as he watches you walk away, curious to find out more about you, especially after your last shared encounter. "So I was thinking... would you like to stop by for dinner? Stahl has work this evening and I'd like to get to know you better."

You unlock your front door, a bit taken aback by what you're hearing. You look over your shoulder at him, seeing a gentle smile rest upon his face, a smile that the media hasn't shown since his father's death. "I'd like that. Since we're going to hang out, does this make us 'friends', Chrom?"

"Yes it does," he nods. "Uhh, I'm not the greatest cook but I can whip up some salad and pasta. Is that OK?"

"That's fine. I look forward to dinner. I'll stop by around six."

"Sounds great."

You watch Chrom enter his apartment, glad you were confident enough in talking to him. A worried expression appears on your face as you feel uneasy, hoping that Chrom won't bring up what happened last time when you first met each other. You enter your apartment and put away your groceries.

Soon afterwards you walk inside your room and lie down, staring up at the ceiling as you hold onto a pillow. You look at your left hand and gently run your fingers on it, imagining the symbol that you've seen in your visions scarred onto your skin. Tired from your morning errands, you turn over to your side and opt to take a short nap.

In the opposing apartment, Chrom settles down in his room he removes his dress shirt down to his sleeveless undershirt. He looks at his right arm, using his left hand to trace the outlines of a faint red mark.

"This scar, it's the Mark of Naga. But why...?"

Chrom thought he was getting a rash on his arm, but realized it was starting to take shape into his country's symbol. He doesn't understand why it's taking form, but has a sense of familiarity after looking at it in the mirror.

"Strange things are happening, huh Chrom?" he questions himself as he puts on a v-neck tee and goes over to his desk. He sits down on a chair and reaches in his top drawer, grabbing a notepad and pen in the process. Opening to a blank page, he sketches out the Mark of Naga. Chrom sets the pen down and yawns, finding himself growing tired with each passing second.

"Maybe a short nap won't hurt."

Meanwhile...

Frederick sees Lissa run up beside him as he walks down the large hall, pouting at the missed opportunity to say goodbye to her older brother.

"Aww! Chrom always leaves without saying goodbye! I wanted to see him before he left."

"He's been acting strange, though I can't pinpoint as to why."

"Hmm, maybe he has a secret girlfriend! This is the first time he isn't being watched twenty-four seven, so I wouldn't be surprised if he finally got one," Lissa grins, hoping that her older brother found love with someone.

"Perhaps. Unless this has to do with what we discussed with your sister," Frederick looks at Lissa with furrowed eyebrows.

Frederick enters the library with Lissa as she goes over to a table, attempting to complete her academic lessons for the day.

Lissa looks up at him, trying to remain optimistic. "Emmeryn is going to be okay. We're all going to be okay! We've already encountered so many of our friends from 'that time', I'm sure that Chrom's past memories will come back."

"What worries me is if his highness will be heartbroken that Robin doesn't exist in this life."

Lissa shakes her head as she opens up her textbook, "I doubt it. I have a good feeling she's alive. Frederick, you have connections. Why don't you look her up in some database or something?"

Crossing his arms, Frederick gives Lissa's suggestion some thought.

"See? I got you thinking!" she grins until she begins her next assignment. "Ugh, I hate math."
