thats usually the way i use them, otherwise you can use the eraser tool to take out the black canvas or you can use the magic selection tool to select all of the black
most of the time when you download C4D it comes without the black because of the file type, if you copy and past from a site then it will contain the black but if you save it as a .png then it will take out the black depending on your file browser and if it can handle .png files...
