Description
Man I wish my occupation was just sitting there existing~~~
Ione proved to be easily handled to anyone who could think like her. Kai happened to fall into that category, although he wasn’t sure if that was a good thing. At any rate it helped the two of them form a productive if toxic working relationship, which Kai found immensely enjoyable. That also probably wasn’t a good thing, but he was here to get paid, and Ione was here to make the high priests cry, so as long as they both worked towards those ends, he supposed it didn’t matter how they got there.
Kai flipped open his pocket watch. If Ione was late to training, it meant she wasn’t coming at all, and Kai would have to hunt her down.
A cold presence slithered behind him. “Ione complained to Cynthia of a headache this morning,” River said, mirroring Kai and leaning on the other side of the pillar, arms crossed. “You may as well start without her.”
Kai pocketed the, uh, pocket watch. “That wouldn’t be very Teacher of the Year of me,” he said, sending River a grin.
River did not return it. “The way you carry on with her is disgraceful.”
Kai supposed he was referring to yesterday, when Ione lost control of a bubble of pond water and got algae in her hair – oh no, my hair, it’s the end of the world, wah. Kai told her to shut up or he’d get something in her hair that she’d like even less.
“I dunno why you’re complaining,” he said to River now. “You looked real happy when she flipped me into the pond.”
River had nothing to say to that. Even that miserable prick smiled when Kai scuttled out of the pond, coughing and filmed with green shit.
A glimmer of white caught his eye: there she was, Oseidos’s resident goddess, flouncing past them without a second glance.
“Ione,” Kai called flatly.
Sighing, she halted. “Yes, Warden?” Ione faced him, an sly glint in her eyes. She was unreasonably cocky for someone who almost cried when her hair got dirty. “Oh, sorry – Master.”
Kai ignored that and held up his pocket watch. “You’re late.”
She squinted at it momentarily before shrugging. “I’m guessing that’s a watch,” she said, swaying past him towards the fountain. “Seems to me I’m right on time.”
Kai’s gaze flicked to Ami and Cynthia, who watched from afar with interest. He nodded at them, silently asking them to please just start their lessons. Ione was in a fighting mood today – not that he minded. It was a blessing to love your job.
