“N’swyt da.” Kai smiled as he padded up to the edge of the hot spring opposite River, tossing his towel into a heap on the stones. It was a nice smile that River took to mean Kai thought they were friends, which in turn made him feel a tiny bit guilty. But fuck him, Kai had taken his position, the love and attention of their goddess, and the admiration of Saros and the other priests, and if Kai thought that River acting neutrally towards him meant that they were friends, then he was naïve and that was his fault.
That being said, River did appreciate having someone to practice the gods’ tongue with. “N’swyt da,” he replied evenly. It was, he’d told himself, the only positive of having Kai around: Cynthia had no interest in languages and River was forbidden from teaching it to Ione (the language was supposed to spawn itself magically within her once Menon manifested), so he lacked people to use it with.
Kai eased himself down into the dark water with a sigh, which River was thankful for since it saved him from desperately trying to look away from him. He swirled the water contentedly with both hands, splashing it over his upper arms and shoulders and making the intricate tattoos there glisten. Kai said, his accent perfect, “Nice night. I’m glad it didn’t rain like they said it might.”
Kai, who River knew was fluent in the god’s tongue, usually resorted to easier sentences with him. River wasn’t sure if it was a slight or if Kai genuinely thought he didn’t know more. “Even if it rained,” River replied tartly, “you could have just made it stop.”
Kai shrugged. “Effort.” He said something else which was unhinged enough that it took River a moment to realise what it was: “Have you ever cooked an egg in this hot spring?”
River stared at him, one eyebrow raised, and Kai just repeated himself, slower. “I understood,” River shot back, “I just thought it was an insane thing to ask.”
