Gegege no Kitaro is a severely underrated cartoon. It was one of my favorites when I was three, but it was also pretty messed up. The only scene I actually remember from when I was 3-4 was this one where some tropical island spirits capture Kitaro and turn him into a giant, hairy, green whale-monster. It doesn't sound too bad in text, but it was pretty terrifying ...

Nekomusume (Cat Girl) has always been one of my favorite characters, but Nezumi Otoko (Rat Dude) was always kind of a scumbag. Nezumi Otoko claims to be Kitaro's best friend (despite often being a catalyst for their problems, and sometimes even selling out his friends for his own gain), but Nekomusume is definitely the better friend. She'll tear Nezumi Otoko apart now and again for being a scumbag, but in the end, they're both on the side of the good guys.
