“There are some things far more frightening then death.” – The Grand Inquisitor

------

“I said fire! Fire!” angriliy ordered captain Javade, His subordinates scrambling around him to carry out his order as the bridge of the ISD Indomitable shook slightly around them.

The Indomitable shot out a barrage from it's turbolasers against the massive, strange cuboid object facing it, focusing fire on where the enemy's ship's weapons had shot forth from. This cut off whatever kind of beam weapon that it had been using to drain the Indomitable's shields. Already, after only several minutes of battle had it reduced the star destroyer's shields down by half. But that should not have been possible. Nothing in the Galaxy had the power to take on a mighty Imperial class Star Destroyer on it's own and succeed, not even the Rebels. And yet, that was what was happening. This...ship, or whatever it was, was reducing their shields at an astonisihing rate with only a few concentrated blasts. Only making things worse was that another beam now shot out from another, seemingly random section of it towards the Indomitable, replacing the one that they had just shut down and renewing the onslaught against them.

“Launch our craft! Get a fighter screen around us and order the bombers to take out that thing's weapons."

Within moments, the Indomitable’s entire TIE compliment launched, buzzing towards the enemy with their weapons blazing. For a moment, the emeny ship did not even seem to take action of them, seemingly paused  to study the miniscule . Only for more beams to begin to erupt from across it's surface striking the fighters in succession, almost like it were swatting away annoying insects. In repsonse, one squadron of fighters straffed the hull of the cuboid menace, coming closer to it's surface than the others, likely in the belief that hugging as close to the enemy's hull would make it more difficult for them to be hit. However, as they got close, the fighters' engines sputtered out and the TIEs drifted through space along the paths they were following, some colliding right into the cube and smashing apart while the others careened into the depths of space.

It didn't matter. In truth, Javade knew that they probably couldn't do much if anything at all to stop their attacker.  If this thing could take the firepower of a star destoryer and continue to attack, then it was unlikely that their small craft could do much of anything. No, they were out there buying time. As long as they drew that thing's attention, then it would buy him time to decide what to do. They could be mourned as heros of the Empire later. Although, maybe they could get lucky and strike somewhere that was vulnerable.

What kind of monstrosity was this thing? It had no engine exhausts, no weapon ports, no bridge, no hanger not even windows. It wasn't a ship, it couldn't be. This thing, these...Borg, they seemed more like some malevolent force of nature from a an old spacer's tale...

No. NO. Unacceptable. How could he think of such an unworthy thing? He was a captain in the Imperial Navy, in the service of Emperor Palpatine! The only force worth anything in the Galaxy was the Empire and it would not yield to anything. These Borg, whatever they were, had made a terrible mistake, making an emeny of the Empire and it would be their last.

"Tactical, are the ion cannons ready?"

"Yes sir!"

"Then open fire!"

The Indomitable unleased  from it's array of cannons it's ion weaponery, specifically designed to drain the shields of enemy ships and disable their systems. Turnabout in this fight was only fair afterall,  even if Javade hated fair fights on principle. The Star destroyer pelted blue bolts across the surface of it's foe and blue electricity crackled around it for a time. It even seemed to slow down and it's sickly green lighting dim. That must have done it. They were weakened now. Now was the time to strike.

"Now, lay into them with the turbolasers! And have the fighters circle around and followup with another attack!"

The Indomitable then let forth fire from every turbo laser turret it had and showered the entire facing side of the cube. It kept blasting over and over again for several nailbiting minutes. The cube was soon pockmarked with over a hundred scorch and blast marks, hard to recognise from the rest of the terror due to it's dark, overly detailed exterior. They had shot shot enough rounds thaat would have crippled another capital ship of the same kind as the star destroyer. And yet...it didn't stop. It kept appraoching. They had fired everything at it and it was still coming. It loomed above them now, even more menacing than it already had been and continued to fire green beams at the Indomitable and it's fighters that had regrouped and were attempting another assult, seemingly to no avail.

"Sir, our shields have collapsed!" came a panicked call from his engineering officer in the command pit.

Damn, Javade thought to himself, all while the ship shook all around, forcing him to watch his footing, while small explosions ignited from several consoles,  causing some of the crew manning them to be thrown to ground injured with burns. He thought he heard his first officer, Commander Jolcon, call for a medic but it was partly drowned out from the sound of the hull groaning and creaking under the stress it was being put under, something Javade thought he'd never hear or see for himself.

Sir, those beams, they’re cutting directly into the hull!

Enough. Enough of this. He would not allow this. The Empire had to be warned. Whatever this was, it had had just proven itself to be an unacceptable threat, one he will not let get away with this provocation. Maybe one star destroyer caught by a cowardly suprise could not defeat this menace, but soon he would bring the might of the Imperial Navy down of their heads with it's mighty fleets. For whatever power these foes possessed they could not stand the might of the Imperial armada. He will warn the Emperor of this threat and come back with hundreds of ships and wipe these vermin out for what they have done.

"Navigation," he declared, looking down into the command pit at his helm officers who turned to face him, fear clear in their eyes. "Plot a course into hyperspace. We are leaving, now."

"But sir, what about our pilots?" asked Jolcon, who was busy helping a bleeding officer up from the ground.

"Blast the pilots! We need to get out of here!" But before either of them could do anything more or the navigators could engage the hyperdrive, a junior officer by the window saw something behind them and pointed.

Sir, look!"

Javade turned to where his exceutive officer was pointing, seeing several bright green shimmering lights appear across the bridge out of thin air. In seconds, the lights took on the form of something more recognisable and tangible, a humanoid form in fact. It was them, the crew of the enemy ship. They were somehow appearing directly onbaord his ship! But how? What technology allowed them to do this? But soon enough, horror set into Javade's veins as the lights simmered away and he was able to fully take in the figures that emerged. From their feet to their arms they were wrapped in mechanical plating, practically identical in texture to that of the object they had been fighting. The pipes and ribbing that characterised it gave their bodies a skeletial look. Each of them had some kind of mechanical prosthesis attached to an arm rather than a weapon, such as a claw, or a buzzsaw.  But what was worse was their faces, bare for the world to see though Javade wished they were not. Their skin skin was pale and molted, large black veins criscrossing across their faces. They had no hair, while for each one, a mechanical device had been grafted ontop of one of their eyes, like a miniturised antenna of some kind, with a red laser light emitted from it's side. And their expressions, utterly blank and unfeeling, devoid of any life it seemed.

They looked like some nightmarish combination of organics and droids. Javade knew of prosthetics and cyborgs of course, even of those who willingly modified their bodies by cutting away parts of their own bodies to be replaced by machines, but this...this went beyond that. Only the decraniated could compare to this. Suddenly, all the courage he had built within himself to fight this threat, it all seemed to evaporate from just by the mere sight of his enemy's true appearance. Their eyes bore into him and his crew, the laser lights along the sides of their head pointing directly at them and partially blinding their vision. And then the boarders began to step forward.

"All...all personnel to arms, we are being boarded!", Javade shouted.  Around him the stormtroopers that were posted to the bridge raised their rifles and fired. He and the other officers also joined in the defense with his sidearm. Several of the figures were hit and fell, sparks erupting from where they had been hit and suddering back and forth as they lay on the floor, only further reinforcing how droid like they were. More beams of light appeared though and from them appeared more of the enemy to replace their slained number, moving towards his crew slowly but methodically. They showed no fear amongst themselves, no concern concern for the fallen comrades. They just kept pushing forward.

And that's when the blasters shots stopped working. The invaders were no longer falling, instead a green shield of some kind now appeared as the blaster bolts struck them. Panic began to grip the crew as they realised that their situation was falling apart. Then one unfortunate crewman, who was closest to the enemy was gripped by them before he could scramble away, pulled in amongst them and was injected with something as he winced and muttered in pain at whatever they had done to him.

Then another.

And another.

One by one, they were incapacitating his crew. Those that were injected were...infected with something. Javade could see their skin turning grey and horrifingly, mechanical implants busting out of their skin. What were they doing to them? Even the stormtrooper's armor couldn't protect them from the strange metalic tubules that burst out from the hands of the boarders. Some tried to fight them physically, only to be either grabbed and injected or were outright thrown across the bridge and into the walls. Javade now saw that he had just been cut off from the exit at the bridge's ear, where Jolcon and some of the other remaining  had gathered, still trying to blast the enemy as Javade's group was. But then he saw the look on Jolcon's face and realised what he was about to do. No. He couldn't.

"Get a distress call out, quickly!" Jolcon shouted as he and a group fled back to the rear command area.

Get back! Get back here!" the captain shouted, not with authority as he intended but with desparation. It was to no avail, as Jolcon's group closed the door and sealed it, leaving Javade and the remaining bridge crew trapped with the monsters.

"They abandoned us!? They just abandoned u...aaahhhh!!" a crew member screamed as he was interrupted and taken. The shambling cyborgs even jumped into the command pits, dragging back down the crew within that tried despartely to scramble out, only to be pulled back in, their screams now echoing from them. Soon the only one left was Javade,

But, how? How?" he muttered as the fired aimlessly from his sidearm at his appraoching doom, too overcome with shock with what was happening. Was this real? Was this a nightmare?

"What are you?! What do you want?!" he screamed as he backed himself into the bridge window,  completely surrounded by the monsters, with their ship still looming ominously outside as if to remind him him there was now no escape.

And in one, terrifying voice, the monsters answered.

"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."

-----

The guns on the star destroyer Indomitable fall silent, it's engines power down, replaced instead with the screams of it's crew within it's halls.
