Actually it's a post-surfacing feature. It would be dangerous to activate that below a depth where decompression sickness can occur. It's more a surface-feature where the diver might not be picked up for a little bit, or there is some sort of surface emergency where the diver needs to be kept at the surface and they can't swim on their own (those LAMA helmets can be heavy)...
Of course, the feature is also rather nice to use as a basic flotation device and can be adjusted for simple swimming/freediving/snorkeling...
The suit is rather nifty and doesn't need the helmet on to activate. Just need air in the air supply.
