Description
The idea for this picture had been swimming in my head for 2-3 months but up till the moment I actually decided to start on it, I was thinking more in the line of subtropical fish. But I love veiltailed goldfish with their blend of odd and elegant, I have them myself. 2 years ago I even drew one as a logo for my business cards, in the same cartoonlike style as the fish here. The style suit the baby character very well, so why the heck was I thinking about subtropical fish?Drawn and inked manually as separate objects (the fish being the same size at that point). Placing, shrinking and colouring done in Photoshop using a greenish blue for the water. My internetstation is not my workstation though and shows the water as a blue-ish green. I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Jup.

The dark fish looks like it's the baby's hair ^^
Nice idea and nicely worked out.

Oooh nice fishies! I like the drawing a lot, me likes!
There's just something about the babay's cheeks. He must have really puffy cheeks if they press against the glass like this. In my opinion it's the nose and the lips that press against the glass and not the cheeks (I even tried myself just now )

If it was a realistic baby I would agree, IRL our noses and lips come first, and only then the cheeks. But with this baby the cheeks are so huge they actually come first in a profile, while the nose is quite small. Perhaps the pressed parts are a bit too big for the picture, but I do think it works for these particular cheeks to be pressed against the glass anyway.

I actually experimented with deleting the squashed bits on the cheeks and it just didn't work anymore. It's the cartooniness of the baby that makes all the pictures of him work so well. And make him such a pleasure to work with

Actually, it turns out it's not that far from reality. You should see Ronja's puffy cheeks nowadays; like she posed for this baby!

Ah, but as you can see with the Christmas cards and such, he has got very very puffy cheeks (he keeps stuffing them with cakes and chocolates). It's a caricature baby, one can take artistic liberties
PS. I did squash the nose
