It is called cuneiform writing. And I don't really know if it is actually Sumerian or Akkadian (spoken in Babylon) since Sumerian was a completely different language than Akkadian, they didn't belong to the same linguistic family, but they used the same writing system.

cuneiform....first time seeing it...most curious, isn't...that they share the same writing code..perhaps the Akkadians overtook the Sumerians and received many influnces from the later ?

You just nailed it. The Akkadians conquered Sumer and adopted their writing system! In fact: Akkad, Babylon, Assyria, the Hittite empire and many others used the Cuneiform writing

it was a plausible senario....it usually happens like that...that is really astounding...as it is the way the symbols formed into the writing code...at first they were just little funny drawings
