Actually, the feeling I got before reading the description was that AJ was going to skydive. She'd jumped and just started to freefall when Rainbow 'saved' her.

I wore my Rainbow Dash belt buckle when I went Skydiving. It was a ton of fun and nothing bad happened.
Moral of the story: If you're going Skydiving, always bring a Pegasus.
As for the picture, I believe they are on their way up. AJ looks nervous and concerned, RD looks smug as if it was her idea.

The latter, I think. Or maybe RD just didn't give the chute time to deploy, too eager to save her friend and afraid of it failing
