Description

In the sweltering heat of the arena, beneath a blazing sun, two strong young bodies strive for the mastery. The red haired gladiator, far from his forested northern home, topples and throws the Gaul, following up with a surging drive which seeks to pin him to the ground. But the Gaul is too quick and evades the grip, and soon the two are afoot once more and wrestling to gain a hold that will bring the other down. Amused amid the roar of the crowd, the Consul and his decorative accompaniment look on as the sweating, straining bodies heave and sway.

“And on which of them, my dear, would you wager your last Denarius?” he asks, smiling archly. “The Gaul is swifter and has perhaps the greater skill – but the Teuton’s strength is impressive, and he does not tire.”

“They seem evenly matched,” she replies, her eyes riveted to the struggle below. “And maybe – oh!” She breaks off, her eyes widening at the sight – for the Gaul has grasped his opponent’s groin in tightly clutching fingers, making the other wince with pain. Taking sudden advantage of his momentary lapse of concentration the Gaul now grabs the linen of his loincloth and gives it a mighty tug – which causes it to tear and come away – but not before inflicting an eye-watering pang on the Teuton, who clutches his abused groin in shock and sudden agony, much to the ribald amusement of the onlookers.

“Cunning, too,” observed the Consul drily.
