There were various little paths that led out from the main trail that took you into this open expanse. You can see the pond in the distance but you can also see how little rain we've had. It hasn't gotten much better since this day, either. You could basically walk around as much as you wanted; there were no signs saying you had to stay on the trail, at least in this spot. I wouldn't want to get that close when the river was full; alligators were always lurking around.
