OHMYGOSHYESITSFINALLYTIME
Finally redesigned my Tourmaline OC!
Here's Tourmaline's Info! ^^
EDIT: Altered Tourmaline's backstory ever so slightly, correcting a couple small typing errors, and changing the end to match current canon, since this was all written before Super Watermelon Island and Gem drill aired. Also removed Garnet from the story, and changed it to an unknown fusion, since I didn't want to associate my character with a canon character too closely. I realize this kind of creates a Mary-Sue character, since Garnet is the only known perma-fusion, but eh, sometimes you gotta make a Mary-Sue for the sake of the plot
EDIT 2: After insanely long amounts of time spent figuring out the exact height of the gems in feet based on the idea that Rose Quartz is 8 feet and comparing several screenshots of the show for relative heights, making a chart and applying Tourmaline to that chart, I have now added height to Tourmaline's bio.
EDIT 3: Linked to a journal containing the Tourmaline headcanon, since I don't wanna keep updating this page
EDIT 4: Updated her personality now that I'm getting a better idea of her character. I feel like it's really starting to come together now! ^^

Personality: Timid, Cowardly and almost always stammering, Tourmaline comes off as a very approachable and easy to talk to Gem. Her initial personality portrays her as a sweet and slightly gullible Gem, who can easily be tricked or talked into doing things for other Gems. She is generally very jumpy, and extremely clumsy, which is ironic considering her purpose.
However, underneath this shy exterior is a perceptive, focused and tough Gem. When times get serious, Tourmaline becomes almost hostile, able to sense a Gem’s presence from up to 20 feet away, and always on her toes. If she is aggravated or attacked, she’s prepared to fight back full force, using deception and spy-tactics to take out her foes with brains rather than pure brawn. She can hold her tongue for an extremely long time, able to keep information classified through almost anything if the mission requires it.
She is extremely determined to do well at her purpose, and desires only to please her Diamond, whom she is fiercely loyal to. Tourmaline is also extremely needy of others, constantly seeking their approval and attention. Because she doesn’t do so well at her purpose, and other Tourmalines and Gems in general put her down for it, she is constantly seeking to prove to her peers that she is capable of being a great spy, and that she can succeed at any mission.
She also thrives on the company of other Gems, being almost addicted to their presence. Due to this rather needy personality, she has become addicted to fusion, and is almost always seeking a fusion with another Gem, even if it doesn’t seem apparent at first. If she starts thinking of you as a friend, you can bet that she’s going to want to fuse with you. Once she lets her guard down around another Gem, she becomes extremely trusting of them, and if that trust is betrayed, she will be extremely hurt, and completely close herself off from that Gem.
Tourmaline does have a bit of an ego as well, albeit an extremely bruised one. This comes from the pride she takes in her work, and if a Gem insults her directly, she will feel the need to defend herself and her honor, although she will admit to the shameful mistakes she’s made. She is quite embarrassed by her past failures, which is part of the reason she feels the need to defend herself if insulted. If she or another Gem brings up her mistakes however, she will take an immediate blow to her confidence, becoming quiet and acting a bit depressed even.
She is generally very positive and enthusiastic about her work, and will happily jump at any task she is given. However, if she fails to get anywhere with her task for extended periods of time, she will begin to grow frustrated, and even a little impatient. She is generally good with keeping her temperament around her superiors however.
Likes: She’s extremely fond of fusion, and often seeks fusions with other gems, and has even fused with some against their will. She also enjoys her spy training, eavesdropping on other’s conversations, and practicing her battle skills.
Dislikes: Being taken advantage of (although this happens quite often,) Being betrayed, Being picked on, Being caught, Others bringing up her failures, Getting into unnecessary fights.
Strengths: Tourmaline is extremely swift and stealthy, and can sneak into almost anywhere unnoticed. She is also very perceptive, able to pick up on nearby gems up to 20 feet away. She is a natural trickster, and often uses her timid demeanor to her advantage by tricking gems into thinking she’s weak, and then surprising them with immense strength in battle. She is very good at keeping her mouth shut as well, which helps both in keeping information classified, and keeping her out of trouble with her superiors. Her strong determination and work ethic also help her in staying focused in training and doing her absolute best at missions, even when times get tough.
Weaknesses: Due to her extremely needy and dependent nature, she has become a fusion addict, and has both fused with and attempted to fuse with several gems, sometimes even against their will. She is also easily taken advantage of, which has led to many gems getting her to do their jobs for them. Her need to defend her reputation has gotten her into trouble with some gems, causing her to fight with a few gems. She usually keeps quiet around her superiors though. She is rather easily hurt, and doesn’t take emotional blows so well. She is also very clumsy for a spy, in spite of her agility, she has terrible coordination, and often trips in difficult-to navigate areas. She is also easily startled, and a bit cowardly.
Bio: On Homeworld, Tourmaline was created as a spy for Blue Diamond, and her task was to gather information on the rebellion. On Homeworld, she was made fun of by the other Tourmalines, as she had initially been very clumsy, and had a hard time performing her job correctly. As a result, Tourmaline was very lonely on Homeworld, and didn’t have many friends.
Tourmaline was first dispatched to earth with a few other Tourmalines to gather information on the rebellion, since rumor had spread that there was going to be an attack soon. While on the planet, she met another gem that was part of the rebellion. Mistaking this gem to be part of Homeworld’s army, Tourmaline was tricked into returning to the rebel camp, and was captured. Tourmaline was rather frightened at first, as the other rebel gems had been questioning her, trying to get information about Homeworld’s plans. The interrogation was put to a stop by a Black pearl, who acted much kinder towards Tourmaline than the other gems had.
After some time of discussion with the pearl, and explaining her situation, Tourmaline was quite surprised to find out that the pearl was the commanding officer of the group. However, with some further explanation from the pearl, as well as a few stories, Tourmaline was able to come to terms with and accept the idea, albeit very hesitantly. The Commanding officer continued to ask Tourmaline a few questions, and once the Commanding officer was satisfied with the information Tourmaline had given her, she went to talk to her group about what to do with Tourmaline. The responses were varied between members, but eventually they agreed to hold her captive for a while. Tourmaline was upset by the news that she was going to be stuck on Earth until further notice, but the Commanding Officer agreed to keep her company while she was with them.
Over the next few months, Tourmaline and the Commanding Officer grew very close, often spending time sharing stories, hopes dreams, and interests. Pearl told Tourmaline about what the rebels were fighting for, and how beautiful the Earth was in hopes of convincing her to join the alliance. But Tourmaline stayed loyal to Homeworld, although she wasn’t completely closed off to the rebellion’s ideas.
Many months later, the rebel group agreed to allow Tourmaline to return to her team, as long as she promised not to reveal the location of the Rebel Gem base. Tourmaline agreed to these terms, as she did not want to pick a fight with the group. The rebel gems also insisted that Tourmaline be escorted back to her group, as they didn’t trust her to keep her promise. Since no one wanted to be the one to take Tourmaline back to the Homeworld Camp, the Commanding Officer agreed to be the one to take her. So, with a reluctant agreement from the crew, Black pearl and Tourmaline set off for the camp.
On their way out of the camp, Tourmaline noticed a gem who had two gems instead of one. Rather puzzled by this, Tourmaline asked Pearl who this gem was, and she told her that the gem was a fusion. Tourmaline was rather confused by the idea of a fusion of two gems of different kinds, as she had always been taught that fusions were war machines used by the gem soldiers if needed. Pearl explained to her that the gem's fusion was based on love, and that she was fused because the gems that she was made of wanted to be together for eternity. Tourmaline found this concept to be oddly intriguing, and wondered if such a thing was even possible. She began to grow curious of what this might be like, and asked Pearl about it. Black pearl, after trying to explain, decided it would just be better to show Tourmaline what she meant. So, after some convincing, Tourmaline and Pearl fused together temporarily. The fusion was short-lived, as the bond between the two still wasn’t strong enough, but it was a magical experience for Tourmaline, and one that she would never forget.
Upon returning to her squadron, Tourmaline returned to Homeworld with her assigned squad, thoughts of fusion filling her head. She began to tell the others about her experience, describing what it was like to fuse. The other Tourmalines seemed repulsed by the idea, and found Tourmaline’s ramblings to be quite odd. They assumed that being in captivity for so long had simply messed with her mind a bit. Tourmaline continued to serve Blue Diamond as a spy for many years, until the war finally came to a close. During her time on Homeworld after the war, Tourmaline socialized with the other gems more, often trying to fuse with various gems, as she wanted to experience the feeling of being connected with another gem once again.
None of the gems Tourmaline had tried to fuse with ever reported her, but rumors of Tourmaline trying to fuse with other gems not of her own species began spreading, and eventually reached the ear of Blue Diamond. She put Tourmaline on trial for this, and interrogated her in hopes of putting an end to these rumors. Although Tourmaline was never fully proven guilty, many gems who claimed to have been her victims still wanted her to be punished, since fusion between two different gems was considered a massive offense against the court. However, since Homeworld was running low on resources, and they could not afford to shatter any more soldiers at the time, Blue Diamond chose to send Tourmaline away from Homeworld for a time as punishment. That way, if the rumors were true, then Tourmaline could still serve her punishment, and Blue Diamond's court members could be kept safe. And so, Tourmaline was put to use and sent away to Earth for a time, tasked with the mission of finding the missing gems who had originally been sent to check progress on the Cluster for Yellow Diamond.
Abilities: On Homeworld, Indicolite Tourmalines were created as spies for The Diamonds. As a result, Tourmaline is very swift and stealthy, and can also temporarily turn herself invisible. She is also capable of Electrokinesis, an ability that all Tourmalines have. She can also attract nearby metallic objects, acting as a sort of magnet (this ability is exclusive to Indicolite Tourmalines, as well as Canary and Chrome Tourmalines.) In addition, she is capable of performing all basic gem abilities.
Alignment: Homeworld, Blue Diamond’s Court.
Also, here is my headcanon to explain Tourmalines, and how there are so many different varieties:
