Description HAY GUYS WHAT'S HAPPENING

Okay, so! These guys are actually something I've had lying around for a good, long while; my initial plans for them called for secrecy, but since I'm no longer going that route (adoptables shop on Gaia, lolol) I wanted to reveal them. 8| Their concept has become pretty dear to me over the past year and a half, and I've had a lot of fun developing it. This art here is actually almost a year and a half old, too; but even though it's old, I still really like it, and feel like it shows more of their character than any new 'intros' I've tried drawing since. 8]

Spotlighters are a line of primarily security-based robotics manufactured by a company known as, creatively enough, Secure Technologies. Their first and foremost function is to act as security guards; this particular type (known as Common) is built for patrolling, protecting, and otherwise keeping safe any building, person, or item assigned to them. Initially built to be sold to companies to help protect assets and data in their buildings, there has also been a more scaled-down, 'lite' line (known as Lighthunds, and visibly different) built and marketed towards individuals.

Some quick notes on features and abilities:
- Spotlighters are so named for the 'spotlight' on their tails; essential in night patrols or in dark buildings, this light source can be aimed in any direction.
- Their paws are too clumsy to be used to manipulate much of anything, so to compensate, Spotlighters have a long, prehensile tongue that can be used for anything from opening doors to picking up objects. 8]
- Spotlighters can communicate with eachother via radio signals, useful when trying to coordinate with other units in the same building. However, when around humans or other non-Spotlighters, they'll tend to just speak out loud instead.
- Upon activation, a Spotlighter's color, personality, and voice data are all randomized; these variations help differentiate various units to their human counterparts, and the individuality is seen as making them easier to 'relate' to (instead of being seen as just big, slightly furry robots <__>).
-Also! They do, in fact, have two sets of ears; both are fixed in place, with the main ones facing forward, and a smaller rear set facing continually back. This gives them a very good sense of surround-sound hearing!

Spotlighters actually come in several specialized divisions, each suited to a particular task and each with a different body type; an individual Spotlighter's data can be transferred from one body-type to another as many times as needed. Common Spotlighters are technically the security ones, and there are also Medical, Maintenance, Lab and High-Security divisions as well as a handful of others.

--

Anyway! There's obviously more to them and their story than that, but I wanted to give you guys a good intro without going into detail overload. XD

Given their original purpose, these are actually something I wouldn't mind seeing people making their own characters of, so long as proper credit is given. But I don't have much in the way of information or guidelines, yet. 8| Perhaps once I do (and assuming there's interest) a contest might be in order? I'll be posting more info about the other divisions and also Lighthunds soon.

Also, a huge thanks goes out to =mechanicalkat for the actual namesake of their design; the spotlight tails were her suggestion, and if not for her you guys would be seeing yet another creature with flames on its tail. XDD !

Thank you, and also thank you for asking! You can make one, just please be sure to credit me and link back. :> (Also, I know the information for these guys is kind of scattered throughout my gallery; but if you have any questions about anything, please feel free to ask. <3) I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

"I seeeee you!"

I believe these could be programmed to spout catchy slogans or scold trespassers. I like the concept --- I see plenty of bioluminescence in creature designs, but usually the use of toolbox tools is harder to come by

As for possible improvements...What I suggest is making these look more menacing as opposed to compact, by elongating the bodies or referring to a large predator or monster's body plan. They are sentinels after all. If there's models meant to be small and portable, I think a nimble, rat-like body would be suitable.

Spotlight tails...who knew that could be made of so much win? XD

I also love the trasition between metal and fur, looks very clean cut if that makes any sense.

Hey, I found some of your Layhr pics and they're kind of like some hybridized wolf/snake/bat/bird things I made up, and I thought that it was really cool! They even have a basically same backstory (created in lab, escaped, though mine focuses more on the stories of individuals and the little bits make up the bigger stories and the lab and stuff is alot less detailed) but mine are more dog like, and yours are more cat like.
Sorry for the rambling, but I'm usually kind of shy. See, in my stories there's a robotic wolf/snake thing (my species still doesn't have a name) and I was wondering if I could use your Spotlighter as a base for the body and stuff. Not a Spotlighter exctly, but the whole downloadable, unchangeable data card, mass-produced robotic shell thing.
Would that be okay with you?

(Late commentary is late.)

Aww, even though this is older, it makes the Spotlighters seem really adorable for some reason. (And I had no idea you were trying to make a foray back into Gaia! WE CAN NEVER TRULY ESCAPE IT. D8) I don't know, maybe it's because they seem so stubby in comparison to the newer art? (Which I need to comment on as well.)

But, oh man, I'm looking forward to more infomeats. AND, I would totally do a contest! <3

I... I guess I don't really have anything insightful to add, but I feel bad for having all of this stuff queued up for so long and never getting around to it. My apologies.

HOLY SHIT HOW COOOOl. omfg i love them. What different colors can their eyes/spotlight be? what colors can they be and can they have patterns? do they have four toes on their front paws or three? i can't really tell. What colors can they be? Are their foot-claws connected? it looks like they might be or maybe they're just wide and close together D: Can those tiny purple stripes on the back be a different color as well? Is there much variation in physical design (like the appearance of the machinery parts in the neck and tail)? And all of them have the same number of spikes on the back? i guess they would since they're like. machines/probably mass produced.

(ahahah, I win EPICALLY at making super late replies, I'm sorry Shin! XDD;)

Aw man, I'm glad you like them! 8D And thank you so much for asking a whole bunch of questions; that gives me such huge warm fuzzies you have no idea. ;3; ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN.

Their eyes, spotlight, and those little 'rib' type things will always sync up color-wise; as for the actual color options, they can be almost anything! They're generally bright though, and can range anywhere from being white with faint tint to a fully saturated color. (so you could have a really light/sky blue to electric blue, but you'd never have navy.) Also, they'll never be brown/black, unless the lights are broken or the spotlighter's been deactivated. >3> As for their fur, they can literally be any sort of color, combination, or pattern you can think of; I'm going to post more about it in a little bit, but basically the fur itself is just a bunch of hollow fiber-optic type strands that can project any color it's coded for. But anyway, the color/pattern is usually randomized upon activation, though specific colorations can be pre-coded for if whoever buying it wants them to be. 8U Once they're activated the color gets 'locked in', though, so it can't be changed after that. They do have three toes in front, though sometimes I'll forget and draw four of 'em. XD And yess, their feet-claws are all fused at the base! 8] *happy someone noticed* And I think, as far as the little purple stripes go, they could be? (a different color) I think they tend towards that shade overall though. o_o

There's not much variation in the actual physical component of their design, 'cause they are mass produced; but there is considerable variation between the different divisions. :> For example, the medical division have smaller eyes, including a third 'x-ray' lens in the middle of their heads; their jaws can also open in a tri-split (so instead of upper and lower jaw, it's upper and two lower) as well as various other things. There also tends to be slight differences in appearance of all the metal/machinery components (like the neck and tail) among divisions, too. But yeah, as far as the Common spotlighters go, they should all have the same number of spikes unless one was broken or removed for some reason, which is possible. :> (though that does remind me! I drew them with five spikes here in this older art, but their design has changed since then; now it's more like three. XDD)

Thanks again for asking, and I hope that answers your questions! 8U

Yes that answers my questions!! Sorry I just noticed I asked what color they are like four times. XDD <33

thank you so much for answering them all, I really dig these guys.yay for noticing the toes are connected at the base,i feel super cool! since the fur is fiberoptic, does that mean it emits light too?

i think that's all i can think of for now XD

dragonrise [2009-08-25 02:38:50 +0000 UTC]

Why yes I believe a contest is in order. >:V

What do those things on their ribcages do, just out of curiosity? Are they simply support, or some kind of external wiring, or..? Also! Those are extra ears just behind their forward facing ones, right? Ah, to be able to hear in two (four?) directions at once. xD I guess it means that they can't rotate, though.

You have such cool ideas, Whitney. D: You and Ghost both.

8DD! *is glad you think so~! >D*

Oh! Those are... it's kind of hard to tell because of old/I drew them sort of badly here, but they're actually hollow light-tubes (of possibly glass, or maybe really heavy-duty plastic?) that glow the same color as their eyes and spotlight. :> I'm not sure that they serve much of a purpose other than looking pretty, to be honest. As for the ears, thanks for reminding me! *meant to add that but forgot, so goes to do so now <3* Those are indeed an extra set of ears, which are slightly smaller than the main ones; and you're right in that it means they're fixed in place. Two ears face forward and two face back, so it's total surround sound. 8]

Aww, thank you, Jess! ;33; You know, I think you have pretty awesome ideas yourself! <3

Coronaviridae In reply to SparkleNinja [2009-10-17 22:40:49 +0000 UTC]

Even if it makes it a MYSTERY as to how they exactly match the colors of the eyes and tail, the rib lights could be chemical cold-lights in a heavy plastic housing so the Spotlighter can be seen and retrieved even if it's deactivated in low-visibility conditions. I presume they are rugged little beasties, but even the amount of beating and/or EMP it would take to deactivate one wouldn't wreck a chemical light.

Alternately, they serve the same purpose, but all of a Spotlighter's lights are LEDs and their internal systems are hardened against EMP interference. However, the eyes and the tail are more prone to being damaged/ripped off/put out, while the rib decorations are actually the edges of LED light wedges that extend through the interior of the chassis and continue to fluoresce so long as they have even a trickle of current. The high degree of redundancy in the Spotlighter electrical system ensures that even in the case of a total power failure, the main motherboard battery will still be able to power the emergency LEDs as well as the "black box" and clock chip.

[link] This is a light wedge; what I'm seeing in my mind is that only the very edge of it protrudes through the skin at the "ribcage" to produce a strip of lighted material, rather than those being lighted tubes. Internally, the Spotlighter's chest would be segmented by however-many glowing sheets of plastic.

hi my name is cee and i write crazy scientific extemporization for the lulz of it
