Description
Here is the painting I made or my mom for Christmas, and it's currently hanging on our wall because my mom always wants me to do a seasonal picture for her, so I painted a winter scene with mostly watercolor and gouache for [most of] the snowflakes and snow. (Hallstat, Austria)This is also an entry forΒ AquaChallenge: Snowflakes Β
Painted with Mijello Mission Gold watercolor paint and Holbein gouache on 140lb cold press canson paper.

Aww, Hallstatt! Real great job, I was looking at the thumbnail and though, well, that looks like Hallstatt (been there some years ago on holidays).

I know I see it wrong and it isn't supposed to llok like that but I see a city in the cloud and we see four afterburners holding the city in the sky.
They got in the middle of a cloudy snowstorm, obviously.
I can't unsee this, sorry.

Β I love watercolor paintings. Β This one is beautifully done. Β What isΒ gouache? Β I've never heard of that.

Gouache is like an opaque watercolor that is easy to layer. Imagine a watery acrylic paint and that's it. It can be used like watercolor, but it drys a lot faster. Unlike watercolor when it's hard to fix mistakes, gouache is opaque so you can paint on top and layer like you would in an acrylic or oil painting, it's just thinner and watery.
In this painting I mostly used it for the snow since it's hard to leave white space on a watercolor painting unless you use masking fluid, and I did use some it's just a pain to get off.

Wow, thanks for the explanation and for telling me how you used the gouache in this case. Β It seems to be a perfect solution to adding the snow effect to your painting. Β I'll bet your mom loves this piece. Β

I don't get much of an icy winter (we do get occasional snow) either. I was just inspired when I saw the reference photo I used for this painting it's good to imagine and hope, we might get snow tomorrow actually

That's perfect! The view is so great when snowing. I have painted exactly same scene years ago, but it was summer or spring.
