Description
A geisha (or technically a Maiko).I was incredibly lucky with this picture. There are only 200 geisha left in Japan and we just happened to be around during the half hour or so when the geikos and maikos are making their way to their appointments. They had their own aura to them, from another age so separate to the cars and busy streets around them.
There were quite a few people taking their pictures as they all walked by, ignoring everyone, so whenever one was in sight people snapped away crazily praying for a decent photos. I was rather embarrassed when a group of old Japanese men who were taking pictures there (see greippi's page for a picture of one of them!) asked to take photographs of me.. :S
I love her mischievious look!

This is brilliant. I love her mischievous expression.
I presume this is in Gion?
When I was there, I saw a maiko walking down the street, but I was fumbling to get the camera out of my bag, and by the time I'd looked up she'd gone. >_< So no maiko pictures from me. I was lucky enough to get a few shots of two doing traditional dancing though. ^_^

Maiko eh..5 years training and then she can decide whether to change the collar and become a geisha apparently..darn..its a shame their a dying race..from a dead age. They resemble the pure essence of japanese culture, and then anglo saxon thoughts corrupted the culture..its so sad really. I loved some of the japanese ideas. And i really love this photogragh very much, its going in my favorites. Truly amazing picture, it luck and skill. Really good job!

I had no idea there were so few left in Japan. Is that whole side of the culture dying out?
Beautiful capture. I love the vibrant colors.

Sorry for the resubmission, I edited the link so that it actually links to the picture of the Japanese guy now.. I suppose it is, particularly since the second world war.. I hated the fact that cars got in the geisha's way..! Thank you

Wait... if you don't mind. How did cars get into their way? If you don't mind sharing.

Cars are allowed down the street they walk too and from teahouses I have a picture of this geisha having to walk round a car while trying not to look annoyed.

"Geisha - One of a class of professional women in Japan trained from girlhood in conversation, dancing, and singing in order to entertain professional or social gatherings of men." They wear white makeup on their faces and the most beautiful kimonos There used to be more before the second world war and the infiltration of western culture. A maiko is a trainee geisha (or "geiko" as a the Japanese word is, "gei" meaning entertainment and "ko" meaning girl). Read Arthur Golden's "Memoirs of a Geisha", it's a fantastic book
Thank you very much for the comment

what a wonderful photo! you did a really great job capturing this moment. looks like she just swung her head around to give someone a nasty look. i absolutely love the movement in the metal clip (thing) in her hair. the only thing i can think to say is that the focus on the dress could be a little more sharp but really...the colors combined with her expression make this a wonderful photograph.

Thank you very much I agree with you totally about the dress, I was so frustrated when I saw it was blurred and their kimonos are so beautiful it would help to be able to see them clearly! Thank you

It is indeed a great shot, you captured a really mysterious look, and the contrasts and colours are great.
Good job, though you should use faster shutter time, it's a bit movement in the photo.

ha, looks evil *g* I find these really contrasting colours quiet itneresting, makes the photo interesting. what I don't like is that the background seems as if being in motion whereas the forground is pretty sharp. and you shouldn't have cut off the head
but still a nice shot

Cut off the head? eh? Just a bit of her hair ornament but I really didn't have the time to position the camera very well, so many other people taking photos and they wouldn't stop for people :S She was walking pretty fast at the time and pretty far away from me, I'm sorry for the blurring, it bothers me a bit but at least she herself isn't blurred too much :S Thank you!

The slight blur doesn't bother me at all, because the most important part of the photo is crisp - her face. I really like how the silver ornament in her hair is in motion.. it gives the photo more life and accentuates her glare! Pusuja..!
