Description So the title from this piece comes from the main villain in a solo D&D campaign I write for my wife. She plays a female elf that is trying to stop this black dragon from opening a permanent doorway to the Abyss.

This one looks awesome, I like the fins on him and the head is very cool since it looks like a skull. Very nice details on the wings.

Well thanks! If I had focused on dragons more I would be a lot better at them...I used to draw them all the time.

Yeah...it requires a lot of homebrew rules...and NPC party members that come and go. I DM and she plays...it's great fun and it can be flirty and romantic.

looks good, like those slow monsters but powerful ones (by the colours)
i tooks awesome but i dont think it will be able to fly 'cause it looks too heavy fot the thin wings, also its front legs looks bigger that the back ones, it should be at the inverse,
i liked the "skull" details

First off, thanks! Yeah, someone else said the thought the forelimbs were too big, and maybe that happened as a result of using the D&D black dragon that came with the starter set as one of my refs.

Go to this figure gallery [link] ...find the black dragon who conveniently has "spin" underneath it and spin it around, see those arms compared to the legs? Anyway, yeah, the arms are a little exaggerated. And the wings, well lets just say that magic helps out there. Half the fantasy art with wings defies the laws of physics.

Thanks for the advice! I'll strive for larger wings on my dragons in the future. Thanks for the compliments on the bone colored parts, I kinda got lazy on the skin though to be honest. And I will watch the proportions on creatures that don't exist...(mild sarcasm, but you're right). Shutting up now.

SaKoz-Unleashed [2008-06-05 17:14:09 +0000 UTC]

Looks absolutely deathly.

Now lets get more detailed.

Faults:
The colouring propably brought it forth coz I didn't notice it in the lineart, but the left front legs joint is much too big. Also the right front legs foot should turn upwards earlier (like rear legs's)

Traits:
I like the wings and claws really much, but I absolutely love the spines in his back and the plating at his throat.

I love the picture

Thanks you for the critique. Not sure what you mean by the leg joint is too big. Are you saying the left front limb is too long or beefy? A joint is where the bones meet so I'm pretty sure you didn't mean the joint.

I see what you are saying about the front "feet". But the front limbs are not structured the same as the rear limbs at all. The front limbs are closer to arms than legs. (put your arm straight down with your palm on a table and try to make your forearm "dogleg") If this was a true quadruped animal I would have done them more like the rear. But I do see some faults myself like the placement of the feet on the ground (which does make the front limbs seem a bit long, ne?). I could go on and on about what I find at fault in all of my pictures.

SaKoz-Unleashed In reply to SparkStudios [2008-06-05 19:24:55 +0000 UTC]

With the left front leg joint I ment his "elbow" wich is now almost big as his "shoulder" which I think should be atleast a little smaller.

And I what I ment about the right front leg wasn't that it should turn up earlier, but that it seems to lack what ever you call the joint between knuckles and fingertip, where the fingers bend.
I can find the joint from his left foot.

(bloody hell, I just realized I dont know the joints name in finnish either!)

But don't get offended. I don't think I could draw anything close to better. I find more traits than faults in your pick, but in my own its the other way around.

I'm waiting for your next masterpiece and whenever you want critique, just tell me.

Most definitely not offended. I can see that the forearm may be a bit beefy...I could have relieved that by bringing it in a little but keep the length of the spikes...they would have looked longer and more spiky and it would have thinned up the forearm. Yes the right front foot is a little underdetailed and maybe thats where joint placement gets lost...I'll have to watch that.

thanks for the help!
