<< Previous :: First :: Next >>Eppie was shifting drowsily now, and Alec squirming worse... Fighting down his nerves, Splint started to play the slow, lulling melody the old Mienshao had taught him.
On the way home that evening, Eppie took advantage of a moment when Alec had run ahead to investigate what Splint had been up to during the long period he had separated himself from the group. “You find anything?”
Splint hesitated. He felt… silly, somehow, explaining what he had been up to. Learning new moves- Grass moves- just to take care of this small problem which had, hopefully, been solved already. “Ah… I thought we could give your hat thing a try first,” he replied evasively.
Eppie smirked, quick to make the wrong assumption. “Heh, didn’t think you could do better than me. Don’t worry Splint, it’ll work.” Splint still had his doubts, but he was prepared. And for now, he didn’t mind that Eppie didn’t realize he had actually succeeded.
Later, when the others went to bed, Splint settled into his own nest as well, although he stayed awake, eyes just cracked. It would be a long night, and quite possibly more of a long week or even month while he watched to make sure Alec made it through the night, but they had no assignments. He could rest during the day. For now, by night, it was a waiting game.
Tonight did not disappoint (or perhaps it did, as Splint had been half hoping that Alec would get through the night and he wouldn’t have to make use of his new move at all). It took some time, but eventually the sound of straw shifting and slight whimpers snapped a drowsing Splint back to attention. He saw Eppie’s eyelids flickering too, and felt a nervous lump rise in his throat. Would this even work? Maybe he should have practiced the move more. It seemed all too easy for him to mess up.
Eppie was shifting drowsily now, and Alec squirming worse. Splint had to give it a try. Before reaching home he had snipped a wide blade of grass and hidden it in his claw, and now he brought it to his mouth. It seemed so silly that this could even work at all, but somehow that Master Shao had pulled it off. Fighting down his nerves, Splint started to play the slow, lulling melody the old Mienshao had taught him.
Eppie’s ears pricked and her glassy gaze swung his way when she first heard the noise, and at first everything seemed to be going entirely wrong, since Eppie only appeared to grow more alert. Splint tried not to look at her and instead focus on Alec, although anyone in the vicinity of the sound ought to be affected. Before long, Alec stilled and fell silent. Eppie reacted a little more slowly, but soon enough her quizzical gaze was again replaced with a tired one, and finally she relaxed and fell asleep herself.
Splint stopped playing and waited quietly for some time, but Eppie and Alec showed no sign of stirring. Finally Splint drifted off himself, and the hut was quiet until morning.
For this page I tried to mimic the coloring style (but not necessarily composition style) of the webcomic Cucumber Quest by Gigi DG. Once again, this wasn't exactly a style I could just leap into, but it was good practice nonetheless.
I also went without a solid background again because, as much as I love to make those, I feel sometimes like they kind of hold me back. I have no handle on how to put together an abstract bg and think I ought to be able to do both, so tried that out again with mediocre success. :I
Also glowy music notes. Yay Grasswhistle.
But anyway, I adore Cucumber Quest and highly recommend reading it because it is hilarious and adorable and oh so pretty~ <3

You did not disappoint, Splint, you did not disappoint.
And I wonder what Grasswhistle sounds like. I'm guessing it would sound different from Pokemon to Pokemon, or at least generation to generation. *random thoughts*

I'd definitely expect it to have at least a slightly different sound from Pokemon to Pokemon, and probably many know different songs too. Splint might start improvising once he's better at the move...

That sounds interesting. I'm eager to see what Splint might do with it. ^^

OH Splint! You're a good daddy! <33333
The music notes look particularly lovely (though maybe I'm biased since I'm emotionally attached to the reason they exist), but the background is also really cool.

Hee~
Haha, thank you! If emotional attachment helps the looks, then I'm certainly all for that. xD
