The true identity of the villain or villainess, identifying themselves only as Bewitcher, is an absolute mystery. He/she/it is able to take over the bodies of anyone, though only within the borders of the Radcliffe District of Chamberlain City (at least so far).

Fully aware of Masque's absolute refusal to harm the innocent after one of their encounters, Bewitcher has taken to possessing only women or children to commit crimes, as only they would be harmed. The parasitic criminal simply departs back to his/her/its real body somewhere in Radcliffe. Masque has found, to his great frustration, that he cannot track where Bewitcher's spirit goes when it leaves the host at dawn. Dawn is apparently the only thing capable of driving the evil being away, or it may be that the real body is waking up and Bewitcher is automatically pulled back. The very confused and scared hosts awaken with no recollection whatsoever of being controlled.

Seen here is one of Bewitcher's unwilling hosts, a boy, as seen through the Spirit Vision of Masque. The white glow is the rightful soul, while the cloud of billowing darkness and yellow eyes is Bewitcher's own spirit.
