Jakku was a remote desert planet located in the Jakku system, within the Western Reaches of the galaxy's Inner Rim and was the homeworld of the Teedo and Uthuthma species.
In 5 ABY, the Battle of Jakku ended the Galactic Civil War in favor of the New Republic and the collapse of the Galactic Empire. But since then, Jakku is known to a junkyard because of all the Imperial and Rebel wrecks on it.
Note: Some Star Wars fans called it New Tatooine. And You can see why. They're both desert planet where the hero of the story is on.
