If Zun can do it in canon Touhou, I see no reason why anyone else shouldn't. In fact, it could help you avoid a ridiculous last name like Hanako Jones.

Well Zun has done it for quite a few characters in teh Touhou series and we see how that worked out. If you can do it well, go for it!

Too true.
If I was to make an OC it would be a simple youkai or maybe even a fairy that ends up being caught up in an incident only to end up gunned down like the hoards of fairies you see in the games.

Ex Forms are acceptable if they come at a price: they wear down the user's vitality, the user can't control the powers fully (my non-DitR ex-Rumia interpretation is that she can't see in her own darkness, so she needs someone like Wriggle to aim for her), or some kind of limiter. It can't just be a "get out of conflict free" card.

Don't know if this is relevant, but I go by Newton's Third Law of Motion: "For every action, there's always an equal and opposite reaction". I'm trying to imply that if you make an OC, for every situation, for every strength, there's a weakness.

Now, I consider Kumiko Fujimoto to be a literal self-insert for myself: As a SurRealm Writer, I change my name and wear a cool costume for the lulz and I can enter the universe of my own stories, but I only have power in there because I made that universe. Put me in someone else's story universe, and I'm just someone who dresses cool.
Alyss, on the other hand, is in a sense, a more 'badass' version of myself, but she's not me. However, she still has many flaws and many weaknesses like a normal human. Would that make her alright?

You can make badass characters that are like you, and you can even get away with making a version of yourself that could survive in the Touhou universe. It's only when you go way, waaay, waaaaay past what you're like, smoking, cussing, riding a jet fighter piloted by T-rex while punching a gorilla in the junk, when people start to complain.
