Description
I like drawing attention to things that irk me.As some of you may know, before I delved into the world of fanfiction/animation/whatnot, I was a writing tutor. My biggest problem back then was misuse of exposition. When I shifted to the world of fanfiction, I ran into a new common problem: the inability to write original characters.
The philosophy of a novice fanfic writer is this: the more cool costumes, cool powers, cool weapons, cool things you can pile onto the character, the more victories the character can have, and the more canon characters who admire this character, the more likable the character will be. However, this perfect character is an unrelatable daydream: a personification of everything the writer wants to do, but can't. In the context of Touhou, I call these "Gappy Stu's" since Yukari always gaps them into Gensokyo out of boredom, and a common thread among them is that they're different from all of the other guys who got gapped in at random.
Inversely, giving characters realistic flaws and real human needs and emotions would seem like a bad idea, since it'd make the character sound weak, but it doesn't. In fact, these characters seem stronger for their persistence, we empathize with their failures, they feel real for feeling the things we'd feel, and they're original because it calls for the writer to not call on plot contrivances, but actual human emotions. In other words, how others stories do things do not dictate the character's story (which is what leads to cliches), but the *character* dictates the story alone.
This is not to say a character must always lose. They should lose, but a character who never wins is just boring and depressing because we know they'll never succeed unless out of sheer contrivance. Even if that's "part of the joke," throw the dog a bone every once in a while before I stop laughing.
What's your theories on Marty Stus and original likeable characters?

You only need as much backstory as you need to write. I donβt even bother with detailed backstories: I just make them up as I go. Others I know need a full bio, others just need the basics: it all depends on how much you need to write.

You always like your own OCs more than anyone else does - goes for everyone really. A simple way to reduce the spectacle creep on a character is to have some of the cool stuff be owned/worn/used/etc. by different characters.
It's always a hard sell for me to get into other people's OCs - it's a bit easier in settings with lots of room for OCs or the ability to do custom worldbuilding. PokΓ©mon in particular is incredible about that. Touhou on the other hand mostly takes place in an enclosed space and has a lot of unusual cultural norms and rules that are difficult to get used to.

I have to admit I have a problem like this. I have a bit of a thing for flashy power and Rule of Cool over characterization. I think I may have a bit of a fixation with power above all else, even when I play games I always try to get as overpowered as possible, and I also like some power fantasies with superpowerful protagonists, such as Overlord.
...good lord, it's a good thing I've never written any fanfiction. Mostly I've only "written" for online roleplaying, where the playing field is typically evened either by the need for fairness between players or the presence of a GM to write the plot in your stead. Otherwise I'd be the most egregious factory of God Mode Sues of all time.

make people about equally strong, and if one character keeps winning, punch them in the face by making them lose against someone else. And make sure their powers are balanced. You can still do this while being flashy.
E.G. Earthbending, but can only alter earth in contact with his skin, making him unable to fight while in the air.
The amount of crazy stuff you can do with that power is absurd, but it has a strong weakness that limits it and makes him not unbelievably broken. If he thought, say a wind mage, he'd defeat him easy, but what about a brawler that specializes in picking up opponents and throwing them?

(FREAKING LATE COMMENT OVER A VERY OLD IMAGE!!!)
"The more cool costumes, cool power, cool weapons, cool things you can pile onto the character, the more victories the character can have"
Why does it makes me think of a P2P player with tons of stranges and unusuals in TF2?

Don't try to make them TOO imperfect either unless you're planning to develop them. If they never get anything right or never win or are just a complete loser, then the fans will consider them to be boring unless their failures are Played For Laughs.

I sometimes wonder/worry that myself; I sometimes think to myself "Hm, she's too dull" or "No, that's stupid".
For example, I have two characters who are walking magnets for bad luck: Yaoya Tezuka and Kaoru Nakamura. Kaoru practically sucks at magic, but she tries anyway. Yaoya is a total ditz who thinks the disasters she unconsciously causes is her crush coming back (Yaoya is based off a famous story of Yaoya Oshichi [link] ).
Hi from Youtube.

I am probably gonna come up with something other than being gapped in. Maybe a combination of dreaming in like Maribel Hearn and then not being able to come back due to coma, then being forgotten by everyone and then that body on the other side dying, trapping me in for good. The only reason I am able to stay in rather than fully die may be the fact that I was not fully human to begin with (a total shock).
Also, I tend to be somewhat bumbling... seemingly intelligent but prone to being a birdbrain. Plus that other stuff I mentioned on skype.

I read the character description, read her comics, and she's got a lot of potential: she's empathetic, has a range of emotions, has clear flaws and a goal, and she fits in the timeline if it takes place before EoSD.
She's especially well-written for a "relative OC," which tend to be in the top five for most common OC styles. If I were to guess, I'd say the most common OCs were...
1. Outsiders of a series who somehow get caught up in the series universe.
2. Previously unknown in-universe characters who reveal themselves.
3. Relatives of established characters.
None of these are bad things. It's just how they're written. To mess up any of them...
1. Have the outsider with zero knowledge come into the series and fix everything or show how awesome he is.
2. Have the unknown insider thwart all of the good guys and/or bad guys, making us wonder why that character didn't do it earlier (often saying, "The timing wasn't right.")
3. Make the relative not make any sense in the timeline or relationship.
4. Combine them: a character who lived in the series for a long time because they were brought in from the outside after learning they were the relative of a famous character and another famous character (bonus points if they're the same sex).

Yukari is not that careless.
Honestly, why would ANY powerful youkais go for such NORMAL, POWERLESS, people?!

In Gensokyo being clumsy should be a severe hindrance, since it'd realistically make you shit at danmaku battles.
But, everyone knows a character can be clumsy only when it's endearing and still be a god of war! That's still a flaw, right guise
