Spaztique β€” Vanilla swords are useless... except against OCs?

Description Beat a dead horse enough, and sometimes the horse gets back up to bite back.

UPDATE 1/24/14: Seems this comic had more impact than I intended. Please note that this is Jack Diehard relaying the story and it quickly devolves into Monty Python references. Although it's meant to provoke thoughts, it is not meant to be taken seriously. The OCs used were picked at random and are not an accurate reflection of whether or not they are a Sue or Stu (but they're probably not).

I think my hope in everything escaped alongside my internal laughter.

this was great. I love how ridiculous the entire situation is, and then what's her face on the computer...
yeeeaaaaaaaahhhh... that's a thing.

Wolfy: If I face Jack,I'll not use my built-in Dominator...nah.....Katana.....he uses a European greatsword, strong, but heavy and sluggish....a katana is all about speed and efficiency.

Maybe I should've put in it that at the time, that comic was supposed to be a test of the spellcard. I really have nothing wrong with Diehard or the vanilla sword.

Wait, so if I'm reading this right, then it's basically if you beat a Stu, then you're a stu yourself?Β  Does this mean that I can't fuck around with Diehard whenever I can?Β

Kigurou-Enkou In reply to seeker3218 [2014-01-23 10:08:19 +0000 UTC]

No no, that wasn't the point. The point is that if you want to beat a Stu, don't beat it with their own tactics, i.e. relying too much on power, never losing, etc. THAT makes you a Stu yourself.

Spaztique you did it again. YouΒ  pointed out a dead tillΒ there was no corpse or bonesΒ meme and bit it hard on those who continously used it. If I was hear earlier, I would have never done it with my OC's. Mostly since they would have ignored Jack since he's an idiot and how their much more interested in actually good fights than fights against a hopeless buffon.

Ye gods, this was hilarious, deconstructive AND informative at the same time! Absolutely great!

I got two questions though: First, was my comic regarding this with Makoto alright? Secondly, I feel like doing a comic to sorta encourage these gappies who took the wrong turn on beating this dead horse on how this should have been done. Mind if I do so?

Interestingly enough, I found this just after I uploaded a pseudo-Diehard comic myself. Though I do point out that the meme is older than Yukari even in the comic, and deviate from the usual formula of "This is Jack, watch him die!"

There's also the question of timing. If you had done when it started, before degenerating, it wouldn't be a trap.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoniken In reply to RandomNumbers5902672 [2014-01-22 04:54:57 +0000 UTC]

True. I think the biggest problem with the whole "vanilla swords are useless" thing is not that people beat Jack Diehard, so much as the context with which to beat him easily without looking like an overpowered menace was gone. It worked out okay in the initial context of it being in Gensokyo, but when OCs started jumping in on it, it could've taken place ANYWHERE. As far as I could tell, some of the later ones just ignored spellcard rules entirely, and it could've started out as a simple sword duel, with as little information that is given. It suddenly became a power level argument more than anything.

I think some of these memes get started because they think they can make it funny just by swapping around a few things Spaztique does, only for it to fall flat because the same exact joke gets progressively less funny the more times it is told.

Yeah, the original was made to makeΒ a point and, though I wrote 'vanilla swords are useless', I must say I regret nothing. Though if I had missed the wagon, I wouldn't have done it today.

It's both hypocrisy and the law of diminishing returns: it's bad enough to utterly void the point the original comic was trying to make, but to do it over and over is just blasphemy.

Perhaps if people want to exhibit their OC powers, they can do so in a fitting context with proper storyline, conflict, setting, etc.

Or they could just fall into the vanilla sword trap and get labeled as stus/sues.
Nonetheless, great job on this comic and lesson!
