This is a copy-paste (with some additions) from my Tumblr blog (spaztique.tumblr.com/ ), but it must be reposted.

Twilight of the Hakurei, the club-wide comic tennis/RP (walfasstationwagon.deviantart.… ), is turning out just as I suspected: AMAZINGLY. However, one thing that really astounds me is how well the character system is working. If you're not familiar, it's simply this:

1. Pick the character's biggest strength that affects other people. Note the key phrase, "that affects other people." For example, "He's really good at cooking," is not a strength: that's just a regular skill that only applies to one area of life and doesn't really affect others. However, "He's a fast learner," or, "He pays attention to detail," or, "He's very generous," is a strength because it applies to more than just cooking, but any other skill and especially relationships.
2. Pick the character's biggest weakness that affects other people. Once again, note the key phrase, "that affects other people." Saying, "He's never had a girlfriend," is not a weakness, nor is, "He's a nerd," or, "Nobody likes him." Real weaknesses include, "He's really shy around people," or, "He is untrustworthy to others," or, "He has temper issues."
3. Pick which of the two is stronger. The weaker trait will become the main personality. The stronger trait will be brought out in times of great conflict.

And that's all you need to make a compelling, easily-adaptable character. Boiled down to a formula, it looks like this:

Strength + Weakness x Which is stronger = Character.

The thing I like about the two traits system is that any two traits and which one wins can make any number of characters. For example…

(Strength = Bravery) + (Weakness = Selfishness) x (Strength < Weakness) = The wannabe hero who is really a glory hound. He'll act brave in many situations, but in the end, he's only in it for himself.

(Strength = Bravery) + (Weakness = Selfishness) x (Strength > Weakness) = The Knight in Sour Armor. This hero acts selfish most of the time, but in the end, this person really does want to do the right thing.

(Strength = Kindhearted) + (Weakness = Bitterness) x (Strength > Weakness) = The classic tsundere. While she (they're usually shes) is a jerk most of the time, she'll always end up doing nice things for others (not because they like you or anything, idiot).

(Strength = Kindhearted) + (Weakness = Bitterness) x (Strength < Weakness) = The classic yandere. Sure, they'll be super nice most of the time, but make them snap and whoever is in their path is in for a very bad day.

What's cool is that you can develop a dynamic cast by recycling the same traits over again and switching around their positions.

Let's see what characters we can draw from this…

(Strength = Intuition) + (Weakness = Fear) x (Strength > Weakness) = Luke Skywalker from Star Wars

(Strength = Selflessness and Honor) + (Weakness = Selfishness and Bitterness) x (Strength > Weakness) = Rick Blaine from Casablanca

(Strength = Acute sense of Justice) + (Weakness = Losing touch with humanity) x (Strength > Weakness) = Superman (and sometimes a great number of superheroes)

(Strength = Determination) + (Weakness = Regret) x (Strength > Weakness) = Dom Cobb from Inception

(Strength = Honor and Morality) + (Weakness = Paranoia) x (Strength > Weakness) = Hamlet

(Strength = Honor and Morality) + (Weakness = Paranoia) x (Strength < Weakness) = Othello

(Strength = Honor and Morality) + (Weakness = Too Idealistic) x (Strength > Weakness) = Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay Night

(Strength = Self-Awareness and Honor) + (Weakness = Selfishness and Hedonism) x (Strength > Weakness) = Brolli from Diamond In The Rough.

Quite an amazing system, isn't it? So many characters can pop out of just that simple formula.

If you'd like this system explained a little more, post a trait set below and I can calculate what the character will act like (plus, I could probably give you some contrasting characters to go along with it).

Wisdom and gets distracted really easily? Perhaps a pseudo-idiot personality? Where for most situations, they look really stupid. But they end up blurting out the most important information, without understanding how to put the information to use.

I didn't mean by "troubled mind" that the character gets distracted easily. What I meant was the anxiety that knowledgeable people feel when they think about the world. But I think the psuedo-idiot personality hit the nail lol

ooh, okay. I suppose add the factor of them being very secluded as well. Not talking often and generally keeping them to themselves? And usually just very introverted.
Also, thanks

I'm not the journal writer, obviously, but I think ... maybe it would mean your character might do something for "the thrill" of it and end up getting others hurt because of their actions. Maybe they would be not think about what consequences their words may have on others and end up saying really hurtful things. Maybe this character would disregard things others say as unimportant, since they feel they are the smartest. Or this character might be depressed and, while they care greatly for others, are willing to throw their own life away or get themselves into dangerous situations.

Idk. That depends on tons of other factors, like your character's personality (like their emotions: ex; someone who is excitable is likely to be reckless when it comes to having fun OR someone who is sad is likely to be reckless when it comes to their own wellbeing), who your character knows, the character' backstory, their family and friends, romantic life and their entire life experience up to now. ^-^

Even if you're not the journal writer, I really appreciate your comment. ^-^

These are some amazing descriptions you've got there.

I do think, it's the "not thinking about the consequences of their actions" as well as the "not learning from their mistakes until later."

Thanks for this! I think it'd go like this for my character:

(Strength: Determination, optimism and leadership) (Weakness: Subjective, sets the bar too high for everyone including herself) (Weakness > Strength)

She wants to embrace her role as the leader and be the best she can possibly be, but even the best she can do doesn't seem like enough in her eyes. She puts all of her faith in people, even when they wrong her, thinking they could change; and she allows her emotions to dictate her decisions, listens to her heart rather than her head.

Ooh, I have one! (Strength = trustworthiness) + (Weakness = short temper) x (Strength < Weakness)
the weird thing about my character is that she overdoes some of her strengths and turns them into some of her weaknesses. for example, another of my characters is very good at keeping secrets, so she will keep a secret for you and never tell anyone. however, this can also cause her to hesitate from telling her friends something that could potentially destroy or save the world as they know it, therefore turning a strength into a weakness.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kalleniia In reply to The-Smol-Bean [2017-07-20 01:28:01 +0000 UTC]

Like you said, she is probably someone who can keep her mouth shut for others' sake, and everyone who has seen her knows it. It'll pain her to tell a secret, so she might lie when she must (strength to weakness). This character doesn't just count her own blessings though, she likely keeps track of everyone else- with her being trusted so much, she's probably constantly exposed to other people's thoughts and new information. This is also likely a stretch, but if you want, she can become somewhat manipulative due to her short temper. And since people can do anything when they have outbursts, your character might use her knowledge against or for others.

How's this for a protagonist?
(Strength = Kindhearted) + (Weakness = Introverted) x (Strength < Weakness)
Or should it be (Strength > Weakness)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zakuhtet In reply to MegamanElric18 [2017-04-13 04:32:14 +0000 UTC]

Depends on what you want.

Strength < Weakness
She's someone who genuinely wants to help others but due to her introverted nature, she keeps herself away from people as much as possible, maybe even away from people who needs help.

Strength > Weakness
Someone who would rather be alone by herself but she's more than willing to break out of her shell if someone needs help.

(Strength = Honor & Morality) + (Weakness = Sociopathic) x (Strength > Weakness)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheArtistDope In reply to zakuhtet [2017-05-19 12:33:52 +0000 UTC]

For the first character (I'll be calling that character a male, sorry if it's a female...)

(Strength > Weakness)
A sadistic man at heart he is, enjoying other's suffering, yet he holds on to his morals. While he enjoys other's pain, he must remember to be a good person and be one that shall be honored,

(Strength > Weakness)
He is thought to be an untrustworthy man, his lack of shame and remorse keeps him from feeling bad about anything. Still, he must think about the right and wrong and do what is right. Then he shall be an honorable man.
