Description I open my door.
A burst of wind pushes me
off balance, and I nearly
fall to the ground.
I breathe in deeply,
the cold seeping into me.
The air chills my ears
and reddens my nose,
throwing my hair across my face
with a tickling caress.

I shut my eyes against the harsh wind.
When I open them again,
I stand in awe of nature's masterpiece.
The once green leaves have darkened to the brown
of hot cocoa,
with bright flashes of gold, Indian orange, and candy apple red.

Pausing for a moment to simply
admire the warm colors,
I long to reach out to touch the leaves
to be sure they are real.

I step out my door.
Fall welcomes me with a soft embrace
as the leaves tumble about me.
My hair whips around me
in the funnel of wind,
the leaves gently brushing against me.

I hold out my hand and the leaves fall to the ground.
All but one
which twirls slowly
and lands carefully in my palm.
The intricate, melting design of gold and red
of one unique, crinkly maple leaf entrances me
before flitting away once again.

Autumn is here.
