Description
If I could change anything, I think it would be people's idea of "beautiful." I hate the way that, even as a child, we are taught how to look, how to dress, what sort of people to accept. Advertisements show girls that we should be perfect- with tall, skinny bodies, flat stomachs, plucked eyebrows, big boobs, long lashes, pouty lips, rosy cheeks, flawless skin, styled hair. Who came up with this ridiculous idea of "beauty"? Who decided it is more attractive to have rib cages poking out than full figures? Why are advertisements photoshopped- air-brushed to perfection, creating a "beauty" that only a computer could generate? As a child we play with Barbies whose waists are half as big around as their hips. And THAT is how we expect women to look- like plastic blond bimbos. Their feet are molded into the shape of high heels for pete's sake! It's time girls started seeing what true beauty is-- not in hair products and layers of makeup, not in starving themselves or obsessing over magazines--but in soft smiles and kind eyes, in warm laughter and tight hugs. What makes a person beautiful is her nonchalance over singing loudly despite she's completely tone deaf, not caring that her hair is a wreck and her earrings don't match, loving her friends despite their flaws, laughing uncontrollably even though she snorts, and the fact that she always gets a milk moustache and spaghetti sauce all over her face.Beauty isn't what we see. It's what we feel. It's knowing a persons insides and admiring each thing that makes them special. And accepting their crazy quirks that other people might poke fun at. It's embracing your thin lips, big feet, frizzy hair. It's being who you are and not caring a bit what others think.
I have a funny nose, round hips, big thighs, chipped nail polish, and haven't a clue in the world how to put on eyeliner, and I wouldn't trade ANY of that for pouty lips and fully, shiny hair. I hope each girl can see the beauty in her flaws and love them more than so-called "beauty."
