The tone shifts because the audience is growing up. They find that the world is very complicated and view it through open lenses. Growing up can be hard for people who loved “The good old days” when they didn’t need to worry about anything, but they have to understand that their world is changing. By shifting the tone, they get to keep the audience that grew up with the show and a new audience with adults.
BFB was always more dark compared to the other seasons, even BFDIA, but I think that it pulls off the tone shift pretty well for a show that is nearly ten years old.
And while we will miss the good old days of shows like Steven Universe and Adventure Time, where it was only fun adventures, we have to grow up someday.

For example, or two in this case, the DC movie, named Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog game can fall under a scenario where edgelords, who find any light-hearted and PG-13 material “is for little babies”, can easily claim these two the absolute best.
I was just fearing that once the show keeps growing with the audience, the show’s devoted fandom might later become edgelords who have the same traits where they claim that any fun moment is out of place.

Yeah, I understand that the creators are aging, and I respect that.
I just still don’t think an overly dark tone doesn’t always complete a good episode, neither does it complete a movie or a video game. It can often take itself way too seriously with its darkness or simply ruin the chance to care about what happens next if it does.

I meant the AUDIENCE, though there are exceptions. Creators are mostly cashing in on a more mature audience by making the movie dark. Tone shifts because we realize that the world is more complex then we make it out to be, and there are a lot of issues going on in the world.

I’m not sure if I am able to cope with that “growing with the audience” when it comes to BFDI though.

Let’s not make a big deal out of it. No show is perfect.

Well at least you’re not encouraging me to address “Don’t Dig Straight Down” as the best episode of BFB.
Because like you said before, nobody has to follow someone’s opinion if they don’t want to, right?

I think if I was a reviewer, it'd be the same thing, except the fifth panel is just me crying about how the show became depressing.
At least if it was pulled off well.

Yeah, I agree.
Thats why you should take Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal for example, which uses the dark tone correctly by having a dog-eat-dog world full of prehistoric monsters that attempt to kill the two main characters, which is a caveman and a T-rex.

I think the 3rd panel is what I usually aim for. For example, I like Kirby Right Back at Ya because it's a bit dark yet still funny.
