Well, Splinter dying isn't at all new, nor a surprise. He's died in multiple timelines of TMNT, including the Mirage version. Personally, I could never get myself to root for this this version, so killing him off might induce character develop that may actually stick. In all, I hope his death is utilized to its fullest.

I still say it's not right or fair that this should happen to Splinter. He's quite an important character for the whole franchise.
True, he's been involved in impossible scraps and near-death experiences from the original 80's series right up to the live movies, but he's always managed to bounce back.
I mean, loosing Splinter to the series would be like the Turtles loosing one of their limbs.
