Chapter 1: Misery loves company

It was the middle of winter and a new snow fall was upon Mobius. People stayed tucked away in their homes as the wind made the roofs creak and the power go out. One soul dared stay out in it and that was Knuckles. Sonic had been over many times to try and convince Knuckles o go inside but the guardian ignored the blue hero and endured the snow. Knuckles wore nothing more than a pair of faded jeans, a white T-shirt and a black woollen coat to cover it all. Sonic had stood there in a pair of dark blue jeans, a green sweater and a coat, just watching the guardian. "I heard you broke Amy's heart" Knuckles said turning to Sonic. Sonic blushed sheepishly and became slightly annoyed at being reminded.

Silence followed for a few minutes before anyone spoke but when someone did it was Knuckles. "Why do you do that?' he ended up asking "she's a really sweet girl and all she wants is a date." "SHUT UP" Sonic finally shouted becoming louder then gale "just stay out of it." Knuckles was shocked to hear Sonic yelling at him and looked over with a perplexed expression meeting that of anger. "Who are you to tell me who to love?" Sonic said right in front of him now. "I wasn't" Knuckles said putting his hands up to defend himself "I was simply saying that Amy is a nice girl and you should be so blunt with her just explain why you don't want to date and she should understand." Sonics ears remained deaf to his words as he stood and walked away from the alter.

Knuckles watched him walks away, eyes wide, 'Fine' he thought 'if he wants to freeze to death let him.' Knuckles knew that sonic couldn't leave the island and get the mainland unless he lowered the island there and he refused to until Sonic stopped being such a child. He leaned back against the large green jewel and pulled his coat tighter around him. It was below freezing and the cold was starting to seem into Knuckles's thick fur. Knuckles didn't know how Sonic stood out here with him. Knuckles's fur was thicker than Sonics and here was Sonic walking around in the snow. Knuckles touched the Master Emerald closing his eyes and calling upon its powers. The flow of energy gave Knuckles strength and he stood tall looking more like a guardian than ever.

The gale got worse and the snow made a sheet of white in front of Knuckles's eyes. He could survive this weather on the Master Emeralds power but Sonic had been out there for hours and had not returned. Knuckles knew it was a stupid idea to look for Sonic but he couldn't let himself be with the thought of Sonic dying. He stood with stiff legs and set down the stairs of the Alter. He went into the forest calling Sonics name trying to raise his voice over the wind but it was hopeless it was too strong. Knuckles pushed on as drifts of snow slowed him down and pushed against him.

After an hour Knuckles had found no sign of Sonic but thanked chaos that the blizzard was starting to calm. Knuckles looked up and saw the night coming and knew if he didn't find Sonic soon he wouldn't survive. "SONIC" he called over the weak wind that now blew "SONIC WHERE ARE YOU? ANSWER ME." No reply came to Knuckles's pleas and he broke into a quicker pace. He finally found Sonic huddled in the snow on his side, shivering and whimpering. Knuckles hurried to Sonics side and turned him onto his back. The hedgehogs face had turned blue matching almost the rest of his fur and his body was stiff. Knuckles growled and knew he had to take Sonic to a hospital which meant leaving the Master Emerald unguarded.

Knuckles picked Sonic up and ran back towards the alter. When there he placed sonic by the gem and put both hands on it. The Master Emerald became bright and the island started to lower towards the mainland. Knuckles then started his trek toward the edge of the island, trying to warm Sonic. He stepped onto the grass of the mainland and headed for the city. When he got to the beach he knew the city wasn't far off. Sonic had started to warm and his breathing started to become stronger. Knuckled looked at color returning to Sonics face and sighed in relief.

He finally got to the hospital and walked in. "Oh my" A nurse said coming over "what's happened." Knuckles looked up and saw a cat with black fur and orange eyes. She was wearing a regular nurse's outfit and wore a worried face. "I-I found him in the woods...he went there when the blizzard hit" Knuckles lied "He's freezing cold." The cat nodded and beckoned him to follow her as she walked down a hallway. They stopped at a room and the nurse walked in and pulled back the blankets. "Put him here and cover him up" she ordered "I'm going to go get hot water bottles and more blankets." Knuckled placed him on the bed and covered him up like he was told. He looked to a phone on the table and racked his brain for a number.

He finally remembered the number for Tails picked up the phone and dialled. "Hello?" asked a sleepy voice with a yawn "who is this?" "Tails" answered Knuckles frantically "it's me Knuckles I need you to get to the hospital Sonics here he was on the island when the storm hit and he got lost in the woods." He heard a shuffling on the other end and finally heard Tails in an awakened tone. "I'm on my way Knuckles please stay there until I get there" and the line went dead. Knuckles growled he had to get back to watch the Master Emerald but he sat down and waited.

Tails finally showed up after Sonic was covered in hot water bottles and blankets. "Is he ok?" he asked walking up to the bed. "The nurse said he should be fine" Knuckles replied "he has some frostbite and he's probably sick but he'll pull through." Tails sighed in relief "good" he said "thanks for waiting for me Knuckles I know you have the master emerald to watch over." Knuckles nodded and was about to leave when he saw Amy walk in. "I'm here Tails' she said smiling "is he ok?" Knuckles was shocked that she asked that, for once he wished she wouldn't forgive him. He sighed knowing Amy had to big a heart to really stay angry for long.

"They said he should be fine" Tails answered "just some frostbite and a cold, you didn't have to come I said you could come in the morning." "I know" Amy said with a smile "I just wanted to see if he was alright." Knuckles noticed the sad spark in her eyes and his heart tightened slightly. Sonic had cut her deep this time finally making it clear that nothing was happening. "Uh Amy" knuckles started but his words caught in his throat as her sad eyes turned to him. He searched for something and sighed unable to form words.

"I'm sorry" he finally struggled out "about what Sonic said." Amy smiled sadly and looks back to Tails. "I'm going to go home if you're going to stay here with him" she said "I'll visit in the morning." Tail nodded and sat down in the chair by his bed curling his tails around himself. "I haven't seen you in ages Knuckles" she laughed slightly turning to leave "you should come down more often." Knuckles let out and breathe and gave Sonic one last glance before walking out of the room.

He walked down the streets heading for the beach ready to return home. Tomorrow was a promise to be sunny and Knuckles thought he would starts making himself a house. Night like this was harsh and he finally got sick of gritting his teeth and bearing it. He was twenty years old and he wanted nothing more than to be a little warmer in the winter. He got to the edge of the island and let out a sigh, back to guarding the curse the kept him tied here. Reaching the steps of the alter turned his legs stiff. He was sick and tired of watching this jewel and finally realized it. He wasn't going to let this jewel control him anymore.

He stopped at the foot of the stairs and clenched his fist. He looked up at the fem and turned his back on it. He vowed to himself that he wouldn't let this thing keep from his friend anymore. He wanted a life, he wanted to be with his friends, and he wanted love. His mind flashes to Amy when he thought about love but shook his head; she had eyes for only Sonic...or did she. Maybe Amy had finally got it and decided to move on, maybe Knuckles had a small chance. He sat at the bade of the alter and shut his eyes vowing this would be his last night with this curse.
