I've wanted to do this ever since I saw 's "Evolution of Vigil" piece [link] and got inspired.Virtus has not been around for as long as Vigil has, but he has still had far worse fashion disasters in his past incarnations...

From left to right:
1 - [link] Believe it or not, Virtus was once a Sonic fancharacter persona named Speedslide. And now you know where my dA username came from. The first incarnation of what would eventually become Virtus, back in 2006.
2 - [link] A bit later, I tried reinventing the character with a new name, which was "Crappy". No wait, it was "Crossover"... Which still was crappy.
3 - [link] Another reinvention, another pretty horrible new name.
4 - [link] Still with the same name, but you can probably tell that I grew to hate it pretty quickly.
5 - [link] I finally found something that sounded cool, and I guess I finally found a good letter to put on that chest. He was now renamed Virtue, which I thought was original, yet really hit the home of the character's personality. (Isn't it a bit funny that the fifth redesign was the one where the V-theme came in? Roman numerals and all that...)
6 - [link] ... Good lord, what was I thinking?
7 - [link] ... No, really, what was I thinking!?
8 - [link] It was about here that I decided to rename the character Virtus (Apparently, Marvel Comics already had a character named Virtue, and I wanted my characters to have unique or at the very least not so overused names) and you can notice that this is where I was finally on to something designwise...
9 - And finally, the Virtus we all know and love! Sure, I have tweaked the design a little, removing the hand and foot Vs since then, but overall, still the same design I've been using since 2008.

Wouldn't it be cool if this became a DA meme? I would love to see more character evolutions like this made by others!

This is pretty cool. Β I wish I had thought of this. What I do notice is that one of my first heroes had the same affect from the first design to second. However, I didn't change him much after the second. He is about 26 years old since his creation. Β I should do what you have done here with Virtus.Β
PS. Is he still part of the HUniverse? Or still part of Heroes Alliance? Β

You should. Kind off makes you cringe when you look at the old designs, but it makes you feel much better about the current look. ^^
As of now, I'm considering his early days with the HUniverse non-canon once I get his origin up. The more people that ignore it, the better. He wasn't that essential to the team anyway.

Wow, I see Virtus has gone through many design changes over the years, nice to know you stuck with him for so long, and also interesting that you would still have all of those previous designs of his in your gallery as well.

I'll admit that he was a WIP until about late 2007, which was when I finally found a look I could settle on. As for having the old designs in my gallery... Well, I've always been a lazy cleaner.

Ha, I love these kinds of drawings, showing the evolution of characters over time.
I actually did something like this wayyyyyy back in 2011.

And yeah, I can see some style improvement here. I just chickened out and redraw all my previous designs in one sitting.
It was for me. Most of the good speedster name didn't come to me until I had matured a bit to the character creation process.

Wow - poor Virtus has some fashion disasters in his past! I didn't know he had so many different designs in his history - but I guess it suits a speedster to get bored with his look and change suit! 5,6 and 7 are OK I think - although they look more villainous than the final version - maybe you could reuse them?

Just like Vigil's past designs, I don't consider any of the other suits in continuity. I do have some alternate Virtus suits planned, but those are all meant to be short-lived. For example, a blue/yellow suit for a brief stint as a government hero.
I do have an idea of a sort of "scrapbook universe" where all my scrapped ideas could go without necessarily having to make sense, but I don't know if everyone will appreciate such a meta concept. Then again, it is MY multiverse, and I guess I decide what goes and what doesn't go.

Anyways, this really surprised me because I always thought you were into Marvel comics or DC comics, considering your character. But, really, you got into this by sonic. Really??

Female Marvel comic copy...? I didn't quite understand that. XD
I feel I owe you an explanation. Back then I was still a pretty sucky artist and Sonic art was pretty much the only thing I could draw. Like many other fans, I created a fan-character. But later on, I felt that he would work better in his own universe, as I didn't want a Sonic fancharacter that was faster than Sonic. Thus, the Virtusverse slowly started to grow from there, as I gradually got better at superhero art.
Nowadays, I'm still a Sonic fan, but I've gradually shifted towards being inspired by Marvel AND DC, as reading comics has gotten vastly easier to do through the Internet.

Maybe you should do one? I know that Stray, Bonnie, Kandy and whatnot haven't changed that much, but I'm sure a certain Ms. Nightingale would look absolutely stunning from first to final draft on her evolutionary catwalk...
