I really wonder why his hair red/purple here... Compared to Crash 1 and 3 it's really strange.

It might just be the lighting but it does look purple I never noticed that when I played the game

Then again, this is the Crash's early years we are talking about here. I suppose they were still trying to finalize Cortex's design at that time before settling on the black/dark blue hair as seen from Crash 3 onwards as his standard look. And as already mentioned, this design was for some reason used for the Tiny boss fight in Crash 3 while his Crash 1 (low polys and whatnot) was used for the last boss fight in the same game. Just some trivia tidbits for you.

I think it's because they didn't want his black hair to blend in with the dark lighting. If you look at Luna from Sailor Moon, she has purple colored fur. I can guess that the anime made her a purplish color instead of black due to the same reasons.

Well, Crash 2 does have lots of darkish environments if nothing else... Doesn't quite explain why that model appeared in Tiny's fight in Crash 3 though...
