Description ...They're Interesting: Spider-Man (Marvel). I figure that any gallery of "characters I like" ought to begin with my favorite character of all. Between his perfect and timeless origin story, human elements like his love life and his bond with his aunt, relationships with his rogues gallery and others, and his constant struggle to balance super heroics with his personal life, Spider-Man is indeed a very interesting character.

...They're Cool: Batman (DC). Practically the poster boy for "coolness" and my other favorite superhero. 'Nuff said.

...Their character makes sense: Lord Starkiller (Star Wars): In this case, the character "makes sense" in that he represents a logical end result for a Galen Marek who fails to achieve redemption, and his resemblance to Darth Vader is especially appropriate given that Vader was both his original master and the man who started him down the Dark Side.

...They have flaws: Miranda Lawson (Mass Effect). You see, where Miranda's insufferable haters (and make no mistake, they ARE numerous), give her shit for being sexy and for being flawed, those are precisely the reasons why I love her. No, she isn't perfect. Yes, she can be a jerk/mean/aloof at times. Yes, she starts out as something other than a perfect saint. But the fact that she starts out so flawed and gradually becomes better, and that even at her worst has positive traits to balance out her negative ones, is precisely what makes her a nuanced and interesting character. Would you believe that Miranda's haters actually describe her as boring? Even though it was always my understanding that flaws (the thing her haters use to justify hating her), are what makes characters interesting. But, I digress.

...Their actions: Revan (Star Wars). Savior. Conqueror. Hero. Villain. One doesn't get a resume like that without doing at least some things of note, and Revan's life is definitely one of the most grandiose and compelling of any Star Wars character. Whether its leading the Republic to victory in the Mandalorian Wars, battling with them as a Sith Lord, or being the main hero of the best Star Wars game ever, Revan is one of the greats.

...Their beliefs: Captain America (Marvel). To wit, Cap represents the ideal kind of American Patriot. Where too many people nowadays confuse patriotism with White Nationalism, "America is perfect and criticizing it in any way is treason" type-stupidity, and more recently, ignoring common sense precautions in the midst of a pandemic, Captain America is none of those things. Captain America loves the United States' ideals and higher principles, but is unafraid to criticize, disagree, or go against whenever he feels that the country or its people are erring morally. Captain America does not pander to white supremacy, he got his start fighting its worst manifestation. He does not view America as the greatest country in the world, rather he recognizes that it has potential for greatness but is also fragile. And THAT is why it needs to be defended.

...Subtext: Alistair (Dragon Age). Subtext may or may not actually be the right word here, but I do think Alistair is interesting for the following reason; he has the backstory of an archetypal Fantasy hero, but has the personality and indeed the role, of a lovable comic-relief sidekick. He is the illegitimate son of a betrayed and murdered king in a land that needs a heroic savior. But the catch is that he does not WANT to be that savior. He doesn't want to be a leader. Again, for all of his having exactly the backstory you'd expect from a High Fantasy story's main hero, he instead opts for the role of sidekick. And that subversion of/playing with classic archetypes is, (at least in my opinion), what makes Alistair interesting.

...They're Smart: Sherlock Holmes. World's Greatest Detective after all. He had that title before Batman did, and in a few versions TAUGHT Batman. Either way, Holmes is one of the smartest of them all.

...They're Misunderstood: The X-Men (Marvel). Given that they're persecuted and hated just for being born with superpowers despite none of them being even half as awful as the Anti-Mutants assume, I'd say they're being misunderstood is a given. Either way, they're one of the best superhero teams ever, with even many people who aren't Marvel fans in general liking the X-Men.

...They're a well-done archetype: Darth Vader (Star Wars): Specifically, the archetype of Dark Lord. Hell, Vader's in running for the single most iconic example there is. And definitely one of the best.

...They're amiable: Rapunzel (Disney). While Disney Princesses being sweet, kind, and lovable is essentially par for the course, Rapunzel in the Tangled franchise (for me at least), is an especially pronounced example. Through a combination of her care-free spirit, her endless plethora of great facial expressions in the cartoon, and Mandy Moore's voice acting, Rapunzel is extremely lovable, and I'll freely admit to having been won over by her cartoon in full.

...They subvert a despised cliche: Asami Sato (Avatar). Specifically the cliche of the "Pure evil, light skinned and dark haired femme fatale with a lot of money and beauty but no soul." I mean seriously. Between the incredible beauty, the wealth, the red and black clothes, AND being a romantic rival for our lead, it would have been so easy to make Asami a villain, and had they done so the writing for Book 1 would have been even more sub-par and predictable than it already was. But thankfully, in one of the smartest decisions made by the writers in Book 1, they DIDN'T do that.

...Their dedication: Hermione Granger (Harry Potter). After all, she's not called "the brightest witch of her age" for nothing. Determined, strong-willed, and working her behind off to get THE best OWLs grades of any student of her year, Hermione is indeed quite dedicated. We haven't even mentioned her commitment to stopping Voldemort and company yet.

...I can relate: Harry Potter. I suspect that one of the keys to the success of the Harry Potter franchise in general and Harry's character in particular, is that many of us growing up could relate to him and his experiences. As a socially awkward and shy young male with a mop of dark hair on his head who had trouble making friends and was bullied often, I definitely related to Harry Potter. His going through an "angry youth" phase as he got older was also something I could relate to. Honestly, alongside Spider-Man, I think I relate to Harry Potter's journey more than almost any other character, and (again), I think that's part of what makes him work.

...They have redeeming qualities: Jango Fett and Zam Wesell (Star Wars). Villainous bounty hunters they may be, but both are also depicted as sympathetic figures who aren't 100% evil. Jango is a tragic villain who genuinely loves his son Boba and has some honor, and Zam is sincere in her desire to help Jango, and even saved his life from Komari Vosa. And together, they helped save all of Coruscant. Yes, all of it. So again, they may be villains overall, but they're not without their positive traits.

...They make me laugh: Midge (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). There were probably more prominent characters I could have chosen, but since I started watching this show I've been very taken with its title character, who is indeed very funny. That she's a gorgeous Jewish brunette always wearing sexy 1950s clothes is just a plus

...They're Polite: Jon Snow (Game of Thrones/ASOIAF). Jon Snow may get knocked for his niceness and morals nowadays, but speaking for myself, that Jon Snow is an uncommon case of a person in his setting who isn't a jerk or a sociopath and actually tries to have some solid morals and principles, is exactly why I love him. And, I suspect, why most of his other fans love him too.

...They're Honest: Dr. John Watson (Sherlock Holmes). As Holmes himself put in the Sherlock Holmes stage play "The Incredible Murder of Cardinal Tosca", Watson is one of the most straight-forwardly honest men that Holmes knows. Besides, I figured that if I'd include Holmes, I should include Watson too.

...They put others first: Wonder Woman (DC). While this is technically true of superheroes in general, I still wanted to include Wonder Woman in some capacity, and in any case, I feel that her selflessness tends to be particularly pronounced.

...They're Attractive: Zatanna (DC). Not my ONLY reason for liking Zatanna mind you, but it is a major reason. Fact is, there's just no beating a sexy magician, especially one as powerful and as much of a sweetheart as Zatanna is.

...They're Responsible: Ser Davos (Game of Thrones/ASOIAF). Similar to Jon Snow, I like Ser Davos largely because he's actually a good human being in the world of Westeros who doesn't die a cruel, sadistic death.

...They're a Leader: Paragon Commander Shepard (Mass Effect). Since I already put Captain America in a different one, I figured Paragon Shepard would be a good alternative. And really, Shepard IS a fantastic leader.

...They're crazy in a good way: Deadpool (Marvel). I was torn between him and Jack Sparrow for this one, but I ultimately settled on Wade to have another of my favorite superheroes here. And really, Deadpool's appeal is largely built around this.

...They're a good companion: Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect). As pretty much any other Mass Effect player ever would tell you.

...They're a good relative: Luke and Leia (Star Wars). To each-other, as well as to their myriad other relatives.

...They feel human: Daredevil (Marvel). Let's see...has a job that, while not the most common in the world is still attainable. Is flawed and fallible, loses frequently, and while technically superpowers is still very vulnerable compared to many other superheroes and mostly fights crime with a mix of his intellect and martial arts training. Yes, I would say that Daredevil definitely comes off as human, same as both his longtime friend Spider-Man, and DC counterparts Batman and Nightwing.

...They learn from their mistakes: Sheriff Woody (Toy Story). As the writers themselves pointed out, when doing the plot of Toy Story 2, they made sure to do a story that would not involve Woody forgetting the lessons he learned in the first movie. So I think that counts. Besides, I love the Toy Story movies to death, and I wanted to include at least one of their characters here.

...I strongly pity them: Black Cat (Marvel). Strictly pre-character assassination. To wit, she was raped in college, her beloved dad died shortly after she busted him out of jail, almost got killed by Doctor Octopus' henchmen, and then the man she loved broke up with her and viewed her as a crazy ex-girlfriend even though her getting superpowers was for his benefit and even after trying to reform and be a superhero remains without him. I'd think all of that qualifies.

...They're creative: Kyle Rayner (DC). As both an artist AND a Green Lantern, this is a given.

...They're rebellious: Wolverine (Marvel). One of the most iconic X-Men, and a character well-known for not being good at following the rules, especially when they're coming out of Cyclops' mouth.

...They have great potential: Grogu (Star Wars). Whether by becoming another Yoda or, as many are predicting, the next great villain of the franchise, Grogu has got the chance to become an even better character than he already is. Of course, if he remains his cute, adorable self for the foreseeable future, that works too

...Their role in the group: Mordin Solus (Mass Effect). My favorite Mass Effect party member, one who contributes to the group with both his genius and his being just plain hilarious. Oh, and he also develops a way to counteract the Collector's Seeker Swarms and sings Gilbert and Sullivan. What more can you ask for?

...They appeal to a demographic: Miles Morales and Kamala Khan (Marvel). While many actively scorn the notion of new characters being added for the purposes of diversity, I myself don't think diversity is automatically proof of bad writing any more than it guarantees good writing. With that in mind, I think Miles and Kamala are both fine characters and worthy additions to the pantheon of Marvel heroes. Better than Riri Williams and America Chavez anyway.

...They're a satire/spoof: Emperor Zurg (Toy Story). Specifically one of Darth Vader, and as far as Darth Vader parodies go, one of my all-time favorites. Again, Toy Story fan. It helps that he's all three of my favorite colors and is in my favorite Toy Story 2 scene.

...They're Charming: Zorro. I mean, he WAS able to cut off a woman's clothes with his sword and get her turned on instead of filing a restraining order, so I'd say that indicates SOME level of charm at least

...Those who hate them: Lady Arkham (DC). Because apparently, lots of people prefer a boring, useless, bland Lois Lane clone to a badass tragic villain with a cool design who also represents a great plot twist. No accounting for taste I suppose.

...Not enough people like them: Count Dooku (Star Wars). You'd think a Sith Lord played by THE Christopher Lee who is on par with Mace Windu in saber skill and trained General Grievous would get more love, but he is often dismissed or overlooked. Granted, he's not as cool looking as Maul or Vader, but he's still a great villain. Better than Snoke, Hux, and Phasma at any rate.

...Nostalgia Value: The 2003 TMNT (TMNT). I'm a Turtles fan in general, but the versions from the 2003 cartoon I grew up watching and playing the tie-in video games for are the reason for that. Even with the 2012 cartoon having won me over in a big way, I still love these versions quite a bit.

...Gold comes out of their mouth: Don Bluth Anastasia. Specifically, hilariously snarky and sarcastic dialogue delivered perfectly by the great Meg Ryan. Honestly, I loved Meg Ryan's performance as Anya so much I even went out of my way to see a lesser film she was in just to hear more of her voice

...They changed for the better: Genji (Overwatch). Genji is my favorite Overwatch character, and the reasons for why go beyond the obvious of his being a badass cyborg ninja. It is also because he goes through character development not once, but twice. First as an irresponsible youth turned angry, bitter, and vengeful after his brother nearly kills him, and then changing again to the laid-back, idealistic superhero he currently is. Most characters when they change their personality usually only have one major personality change. Genji has two, and to me that is a big part of what makes him one of the most interesting Overwatch characters of all.

...They influenced me: Bart Simpson (The Simpsons). While I can safely say I have never engaged in behavior even half as bad as what Bart has done, I do still consider him one of the influences for my lifelong career as a smart-ass and wise guy. I may be much more rule-abiding than Bart is, but I like to think I share his enthusiasm for comic books and sardonic cracks.

...I Can: Scarlet Spider (Marvel). As I began with Spider-Man, so too do I end with his underrated clone. Scarlet Spider is awesome, no matter what anyone says.
