Description This was just something i drew up really quickly earlier this afternoon. Didn't take long, as it's mostly rough sketching, but i really liked it. It has a sort of... Stylized quality to it. I was also trying out the watercolors. In real life they're the bane of my existence XP but I figured i might do a bit better on the computer. And it worked (for the most part). This won't be a common style, but i liked the girl, and i liked the drawing. I hope you all enjoy! PS - thanks for uploading this while i'm in bed on my cellphone. Decided to post this on a whim.

I figured that this would be a good one to critique as a show of progress from the first critique I gave you.

I'm going to start off by saying that I really like this as a sketch. In the state that it is, it is looking fairly unrefined, but I think polish wasn't the intent that you were going for since you worked on this fairly quickly. But when you put out a sketch like this, you are showing promise for even bigger improvements in the future.

The main thing I'm going to say is that your sense of anatomy has actually improved drastically since the first crit I gave you a year ago. I'd even go as far to say that this is probably the best display of figure drawing skill that you have shown as of yet.

There's two things with the figure you are doing right that makes this better than the works you've been doing before. The first thing may seem kind of ironic since you said that this was meant to be a stylized work, but the figure in this actually feels much more fleshed out in the sense that she has a body with muscle and fat. Many of your previous works were structured correctly so there is a human-like sense of proportion and form, but ended up having a sort of barbie-like feel to them. The figure feels much more natural and much less forced, and all and all just feels like it's working better.

The second thing you were doing right is probably what made the first work so well. What really impressed me with this drawing was that it was a lot less stiff than your previous drawings. I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but you are beginning to establish a rhythm within the figure that brings the eye through the figure from top to bottom with a curve-against-curve movement.

I remember learning this principle was a huge breakthrough since my drawings had been extremely stiff before learning this. When you can implement this into your drawings, it gives a more natural, graceful flow to your composition just from the figure alone. You can see this all over the works of the great painting masters of the High Renaissance, and you'll see it in all the golden age illustrators and all the great animators of today (for whatever reason it's less common in anime, but the best animes and mangas utilize it).

I will say that I do like the way you are approaching the rendering and coloring of this artwork. I wasn't too fond of the way you were approaching your earlier artworks with color (too saturated and flat). This one's much easier on the eyes, and if approached with more polish, could become something pretty good as a more complete artwork.

It isn't to say that this image is perfect though. I understand that this is a stylized piece, but be a little careful with her neck, as it appears either a little bit crooked or a little too short. I will be honest though, the improvements you've made with this actually made me overlook it until I went ahead and scrutinized it.

All in all, I think this is a milestone that you should definitely be proud of, but don't stop there. Keep working on improving your figures, and don't limit yourself to stylized drawing; you can draw whatever you want for fun, but if you want to get good, learn from the original source: reality. You learn that, and you will be able to draw whatever style you want since you will know the rules and you know how to break them without getting caught. And I believe that it is showing when you start pulling off more drawings like these. But just don't ever stop doing that.

I'm going to issue a challenge to you. As you are getting more proficient at drawing the figure, start working on your backgrounds. See if you can ground them in a world that makes tangible sense, one that follows our rules of spatial vision. I believe this is the next big step you need to take, and while it's considered by many to be the hardest step, it is the most empowering of them all.

Keep it up, and don't ever stop drawing!

Thank you again for the critique. I've always wanted to work a bit more on backgrounds, but i've just been afraid that if I do it wrong i'll mess up the whole picture. a bit silly I know. I'm glad you liked the drawing, and I hpe to learn from what you've suggested. thank you again.

Don't worry, that was the same reason why I used to always "fake" backgrounds, and it's actually the same reason why some people who seem to be really good at drawing avoid doing backgrounds (you'll find that people who are proficient with perspective will immediately call it out, though). Definitely give it a go. If you have the proper knowledge, you may surprise yourself by what you can do. The important thing is that, if you find that you don't have the proper knowledge to properly pull off--actually, let's NOT call it a background, but an ENVIRONMENT (should put things in a different light as background = flat backdrop while environment = you live in it), your drawings will show you what you need to fix, so long as you know what you need to look for.

...and often times you will go back to older works and facepalm at what you did wrong before. I do that all the time LOL

i like that rough, stylised feel, but the thing that got me heading for the fave button was that ambiguous look on her face. is it relaxation or worry? positive or negative emotion, or ambivalence? i'm just not sure, and that ambiguity really draws you into the picture. also, she has a cool outfit
