While Loyalty and Honesty definitely fit her, I was surprised to see that Luna had Laughter. I thought that she had Generosity instead.
Celestia's general personality makes Laughter a great fit for her, as well as Kindness. Magic was obviously going to be her's anyway.

When I first saw them, I thought of Rupees. And also, this is the third time the show has used CGI. First was the Dizzitron, second was the 2nd appearance of Timberwolves, and thr fourth use of CGI was when Rainbow Dash and Applejack were running down a hallway in the Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters (or whatever it's officially called).

Notice that Luna holds the Element of Loyalty. ironic?

True, but it is easy for people who feel ignored and betrayed themselves to lash out. I'm not excusing what she did but I don't think it necessarily makes her a disloyal pony over all. If anything I think this adds some depth to her (if it was intentional and not random that Luna holds loyalty). If she was an extremely loyal pony, that means she had to go through a tremendous amount of pain that would cause such a drastic change in behavior. Whether that pain came solely from her subjects rejecting and fearing her alone, or possibly even something Celestia did (we don't know for sure if Celestia ever ignored Luna or not, but it seems like a plausible scenario) doesn't matter.Β
And I think they case can be made that Luna is still a loyal pony, now that NMM has been defeated. How do you stay loyal to people who constantly reject you and cause you pain? Is that loyalty or stupidity? Granted, she should have never tried to shroud the world in eternal darkness as a solution to that problem but it is almost logical that eventually, she would turn away from people who she feels betrayed by. We haven't gotten any clear signs that Luna is once again loyal to Celestia, but she has on multiple occasions tried to reconnect or protect her subjects, even volunteering to go to the Crystal Empire.Β

Let's compare her to Rainbow Dash, the current Element of Loyalty:Β
Rainbow is constantly at war between her varying Loyalties: her loyal to her friends (which is the loyalty the Element represents), her loyalty to Cloudsdale and Ponyville, her loyalty to her own personal dreams/the Wonderbolts, and her loyalty to herself.Β
Most of the conflict they have Rainbow Dash experience is when: she has a loyalty that wars with a different loyalty (Rainbow Falls: her loyalty to Ponyville/her friends conflicts with her loyalty to Cloudsdale/her own dreams; Wonderbolt Academy: Her loyalty to her friends vs loyalty to Wonderbolts/Dreams; and the best example Return of Harmony: Discord gets her to leave the maze not by getting her to abandon her loyalty all together, but by getting her to abandon her FRIENDS in favor of her loyalty to Cloudsdale)Β
Luna is much the same. She is fiercely loyal to her sister, intensely loyal to her subjects, and intensely remorseful of her actions as Nightmare Moon. At the same time, she wars with a self-loyalty, MUCH LIKE RAINBOW DASH.Β
Out of all the Elements Luna has, Loyalty fits her best, with honesty in second and Laughter dead last, since Luna doesn't even know what fun is...

I presume you have not read the Journal of the Two Sisters?
Luna is literally quoting pinkie about finding stuff boring and wanting to have fun, and it was her idea to build all those trapdoors and secret passages in their castle for them to enjoy themselves, it is made clear that she is the more adventurous and fun-loving of the two.
Granted Celestia also likes fun, but in a different way, afterall, it is not like any of the Elements are restricted to their bearer amongst the Mane Six either.
I would guess that the reason for her serious persona would be due to the fact of being turned into a nightmarish queen of evil for a thousand years, that can't have been particularly pleasant.
My impression is that she seem to be slowly turning back to her old way again.

Having read that book which gives some wonderful insight into who they are, I will have to disagree.
Just because she did not know the word does not mean she did not understand the meaning behind it, words and connotations changes drastically over time and she was still trying to readjust. She also proved in that very episode that she really enjoyed fun, laughing freely and heartfelt with the others at the end.Β
I think her character and character development feels natural and sensible. But to each their own, I have no interest in fighting about.Β
