Description This is the first cake that I actually put effort into decorating. I'm quite proud of it, but I'm still hoping to improve my cake decorating skills.

Thanks! These are made with a marshmallow fondant that I made and rolled out to create the petals. The fondant was a little hard to work with, so they didn't turn out exactly how I liked, but that's ok for a first try

EternalWandering [2010-07-10 18:09:25 +0000 UTC]

I can tell the background is obviously fondant. But what about the borders and the lines? Are those done with buttercream or royal icing? Did you make the roses on the top out of fondant too, or something else?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpikedPyro In reply to EternalWandering [2010-07-11 17:51:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you are correct on all counts. The background is fondant, along with the flowers and the roses on top. The lines and borders are buttercream. In retrospect, I would have done the roses out of something firmer, such as gum paste, or even a different fondant recipe (I used a marshmallow-based fondant; my first attempt at it), but that was what I had to work with at the time.

Thank you for the fav and the comment!

wow ! its really pretty !!!!!! hey may i ask, did your fondant taste so ad eerybody took it off their cake before eating ? if it tasted good may i ask WHERE DID YOU GET IT ! lol anyways great job on this cake !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpikedPyro In reply to animeluver97 [2010-06-17 02:23:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Actually, the fondant wasn't bad. I made it from a recipe online that used marshmallows as the main ingredient. I wouldn't suggest it, though. It cracked really easily, so I had to put it on thick! Because of that, it got to be too much to eat, but it tasted good! Like really sugary marshmallows!

If you're interested in attempting home-made fondant, though, I would suggest a recipe that uses corn syrup as the base. It cracks less and is more manageable. But it's hard to get a good balance between good-tasting and good-looking fondant. The store bought stuff looks better, but the homemade stuff can actually be eaten (and enjoyed)!

Hope this helps! And thank you, I'm very glad you like it!

haha thanks very very very much ! haha. its true that flavor and looks can be very hard to balance ! i think i will try a couple recipes. and see if there are any good-tasting non-cracking recipes !

This is a wonderful job for a beginner!

I love the colors you chose, it really looks delicious. What kind of cake was it on the inside?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpikedPyro In reply to mirror-book [2009-01-19 22:49:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It was a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. Just the classics. Fondant kept the cake really moist, so it was really very good. I had hoped it was going to look more like a traditional 2-layer cake, with crisp edges, but my cake pans caused it to be very...rotund, lol. I've since bought different cake pans. But I still like it
