If the multi-verse is a comically tall, infinite multi-layered sandwich with each ingredient representing a distinct take on reality, than Zonic the Zone Cap hails from the toothpick holding it all together.

Reality is comprised of an infinite number of "parallel" universes. These different universe may be similar to one another featuring analogous planets, timelines and people, or so different as to be unrecognizable. The sum total of these universes is known as the multi-verse.

Individual universes are separated from each other by metaphysical "curtains" that keep reality sorted in its universe of origin. Depending on the physics and the nature of a given universe, these curtains can sometimes be... pushed aside allowing physical matter to transfer from one universe to another, such as people. This type of movement has the potential to cause damage to the curtains and physical instabilities in the either of the involved universes. Or it may be perfectly fine. The results depend on the nature of realities in question and how they respond to extra-dimensional stress.

Of all the infinite universes in the multi-verse there is at least one that is different. This universe is orthogonal or "perpendicular" to the other "parallel" universes, which allows the inhabitants of this world to bypass the curtains between realities with ease. This has allowed the inhabitants of the so-called "Dimension-Z" to study the effects of extra-dimensional travel and its effects in more thorough ways than is possible in other universes. The end result of this knowledge was the establishment of the "Zone Corps."

The "Zone Corps" is an elite group of law enforcement agents hailing from Dimension-Z. Their task is to regulate travel between different "zones" or universes. This may involve denying access to certain universes or facilitating it as the circumstances dictate.

Zonic the Zone Cop is a perpendicular version of Sonic the Hedgehog and is one of the most decorated agents of the Zone Corps. Due to there being an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of crises, Zonic does not typically interfere directly. Instead he recruits temporary "deputies" from the ranks of various parallel Sonics, which allows him to manage dozens if not hundreds of extra-dimensional problems simultaneously. While more patient and level-headed than most versions of Sonic, Zonic still wishes he could occasionally get his hands dirty instead of working through proxies, but the danger of getting distracted by any one problem for too long could have disastrous results throughout the multi-verse.

Zonic's presence and origin are known to several key players in multiple universes, particularly to other Sonics and their associates. As a result of his rather unique nature, he is always perceived as being "sideways" by folks from parallel universes. Note that for worlds that are quarantined from the multi-verse, outside travel as well as knowledge of Zonic, the Zone Corps and Dimension-Z are also prohibited.
