Description If I could "just get over" my anxiety or bipolar disorder, don't you think I would have already? They're not doing me any favors. I've had people tell me that I just need to 'get over' my anxiety and Avoidant PD and start dealing with people.
Yeah, cool, I'll do that. Except for the whole dehabilitating panic attacks thing and ensuing panic attacks when returning to the situations that caused the first one...

Don't tell people to "get over it" if they have a mental illness. It doesn't work like that.

Should you let it rule your life and use it as an excuse for everything? No. But can you just "get over it" and start living problem-free? Not really.
Besides, do you really think you're the first person who came up with the idea of asking someone to "just get over it"?

I hate the words "JUST DON'T DO IT" and "YOU'RE STUPID,STOP THAT" when people see the cuts in my arm
Well I CAN'T CONTROL IT,IT;S JUST IT'S MY OWN WAY OF MAKING MYSELF CALM...

I completely agree. Mental illnesses and/or disabilities are nothing like simple cold. They're serious matters that a lot of people have to deal with.

This is perfect
I have lost count how many people have told me to "get over" autism, or "get over" ADHD.
I have also lost count how many times I've smacked said people.

I love this stamp.

I have social anxiety, and I can only describe it as a living hell, since it makes me scared of almost everyone, makes it insanely hard for me to speak, at all, makes asking for help impossible and forces me to think that I don't deserve to be around people, as well as make me feel like a slip of the tongue from me mean that I'm the worst person in existence and deserve to die. I would do literally anything to get rid of it. Whenever anyone says to "get over it", "stop being anxious", etc., I swear...(growls) I WOULD, IF I FREAKING COULD!

You just can't get over shit like this. You can't just forget. You can block the memories, but it's always that curiosity that brings back the pain...

You can't "just get over it". You can work to eliminate the disorder, which benefits everyone. I am saying this because I am working to get better at maintaining my anxiety.

Crystal-Gryphon In reply to AcitorianScoria [2015-07-02 03:29:04 +0000 UTC]

That isn't possible with most disorders. you may be able to force it down (through medication or otherwise), but it will always be there.

Things like anxiety and depression can be developed, and eventually "cured" (can't think of a better way to put it), but others like schizophrenia or Bi-polar will be there your whole life.

Medication usually has some terrible side effects. There is a cure for mental diseases. Taking out the upper left hand side of the brain will eliminate mental illness, unfortunately this procedure also takes away personality. Creepy.

Hmm, not sure if it's the same thing, but I have/had a bad habit of picking the skin from my lips, sometimes til bleeding. Is that the same as Derma? D:

Heliocathus In reply to Dragonnerd445 [2015-08-15 07:17:23 +0000 UTC]

Derma is skin picking in general, i usually get it on my arms, hands and legs, idk I just pick at scabs a lot until the bleed, I used to just think it was a habit until I discovered it was a thing

Dragonnerd445 In reply to Heliocathus [2015-08-15 07:19:56 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I see. It's not as bad as my Trich is. But I find it so frustrating how everything I've tried has not worked, one of my only options left is therapy, but as I'm disabled and can't drive, I have to have family help me, and they won't agree to any therapy sessions for this.

LivtheShinyVulpix [2015-02-23 18:38:41 +0000 UTC]

Exactly.
As someone with PTSD and bipolar II, it can be hard. And when it does get hard, I usually end up having to deal with it on my own. I'm sure most of the people around me see me as nothing more than oversensitive and a crybaby, which is pretty sad. Sure, I am a sensitive person. I still take responsibility for the things I do wrong, despite my problems.
But to be called insane...
It hurts. And it still stays with me.
In a way, I suppose I am insane. Or can be. During depressive episodes, I am irrational and very hard to, if not impossible to, reason with. Logic does not go into my head during those times.

THANK YOU
My dad just says "tough it out" to me all the time, but he doesn't understand that I can't just get over it. It's much more complicated than that, and since no one else in my family has anxiety, they don't know what it feels like. Let me tell you, it's friggin horrible having constant panic attacks and stress headaches.

I tried to explain to my friends about my depression and social anxiety, and they just told me to be happy and get out there and talk to people. I think they thought they were helping, but they weren't. If it was that simple, I'd do it. I hate being so sad all the time and not being able to talk to people, but I can't help it.
