I don't understand how there can even be a middle ground of joking about rape...it's *not* funny. It's an extremely horrifying thing.
Being a victim of it myself, I can't tell you how many times someone has not taken me seriously when I have broken down and told them. Because people already think it's the funniest damn thing they've ever heard...
To me joking about it desensitizes people to the situation and makes them not take it very seriously. But that's just my opinion, and I've been told by many people "it's just sex." or "it's not that big of a deal", so I guess I have different experiences with it. But to me, it's still horrible. It's not making light of a dark situation...it's not taking it for how serious it really is. There's some things you just don't joke about.

I laugh at my own suffering. And yes, I've been both abused and raped.
It's not that I don't get what you mean, just that...making fun of reality makes reality easier to deal with. If I crack a joke about being cheated on when I know I'm being cheated on, it makes the reality...less harsh, if only for a second.

See, yeah-- there's a big, BIG difference between using humor as a coping tool, and thinking that the act of rape or abuse is funny.
The former is great-- if you'll excuse the corniness of this statement, humor is one of our most powerful resources we have as sapient beings when it comes to stressful things. That, I can take.
But when rape or abuse themselves -- as ideas --, or someone else being raped or abused is considered funny, that's when it's time to perform a good old-fashioned curbstomp.

I've seen so many people complain about "rape" or "abuse" jokes. But I've never seen anyone say anything about the "die/kill" jokes.

Rape and abuse aren't funny, and going "oh well I didn't mean the actual definition" doesn't mean you get a free pass to joke about them.
